Rosatom ships steam generator, other equipment for Kudankulam

Chennai, Sep 15 (IANS): Russia's integrated nuclear power player Rosatom on Tuesday said a ship has set sail with several oversized components like steam generator, trestle crane, main coolant pipeline and other equipment for the third and fourth 1,000 MW nuclear power plants under construction in Tamil Nadu's Kudankulam.

MS Mont Blanc carrying the components sailed out on September 7, it said.

Rosatom said the components - trestle crane, transport lock, cargo trolley, shock absorber for the container compartment of the spent fuel pool and hydraulic seal of the holding pool - are for the third 1,000 MW nuclear power plant coming up in Kudankulam.

On the other hand, components like steam generator, main coolant pump, main coolant pipeline and passive coolant system vessel are for the fourth 1,000 MW atomic power plant.

The total weight of the cargo is 1,802.38 ton, said Rosatom, and it is expected to arrive at the VOC Port in Tuticorin early next month.

India's atomic power company, Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) is building four more plants - Units 3, 4, 5 and 6 - of 1,000 MW each in Kudankulam in Tirunelveli district.

The first two units of similar power generation capacity have been functional for some time now.
