Udupi, Sep 19: “Padubidri beach in the district is only a step away from receiving the Blue Flag international certification,” said deputy commissioner G Jagadeesha.

He was speaking in the programme of hoisting the ‘I am saving my beach’ flag in Padubidri as a continued effort of the union government’s cleanliness drive.

“Thirteen beaches in the country are being developed for international Blue Flag certification. The national selection committee has selected eight beaches out of them and sent the details to the international jury. Padubidri beach is one of the beaches included in the list. The team of international juries will soon arrive to conduct the inspection. As Padubidri beach meets all the requirements, we are confident of obtaining the Blue Flag certificate for it," the DC said.

“Blue flag certification is awarded considering cleanliness, safety, protection of the environment, quality of water etc. Padubidri beach is developed on those lines and the report states that the water in the sea here is extremely clean. A proposal of Rs 5 crore is sent to the state government to improve the area further. There is no need for local people to be anxious about the development of the beach. More jobs will be created along with the development of tourism here,” he said.

Kaup MLA Lalaji R Mendon speaking after hoisting ‘I am saving my beach’ flag stated that the beach is being developed as per Prime Minister’s dream of Swachh Bharath Mission. "Tourism is being developed here while conserving the environment and without causing inconvenience to the locals,” he said.

District panchayat vice president Sheela K Shetty, district panchayat member Shashikanth Padubidri, taluk panchayat member Neeta Gururaj, Kaup tahsildar Mohammed Isaq, ACT’s Manohar Shetty and others were present.

‘I am saving my beach’ flags were hoisted at the same time on all the eight beaches whose details will be sent to the international jury for certification.

Tourism department assistant director Chandrashekar Nayak welcomed the gathering and rendered the vote of thanks.
