Udupi, Sep 23: Soon after the news of the damage to the handloom shed of handloom weaver Laxman Shettigar spread on media, local people reached out to help him. Union minister Smriti Irani also came to his aid.
She directed Bengaluru weaver’s service centre which is under the control of the union government’s textile department, to provide help to Laxman Shettigar. Jawaher and Tulasiram who arrived from Bengaluru conducted inspection of the damage. They have directed officials to provide Rs 1.20 lac grant to construct a shed and the necessary tools. Handloom and textile department’s deputy director Shivashanker has also extended help.
Immediate compensation is provided to Shettigar by the handloom cooperative association. Several donors visited Udupi’s Yuva Morcha president Vikhyat and team and handed over monetary help.
Farmers are in distress due to loss of crop during the floods that occurred in Udupi last Sunday. Several families are finding it difficult to recover from the loss. People have urged that the government pay attention and extend help.
