Oppn insulting farmers by burning farm equipment: Modi

New Delhi, Sep 29 (IANS): In the wake of protests by farmers and various opposition parties against three new agriculture-related laws, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday that those burning farm equipment to show their anger were "insulting farmers".

The opposition was insulting farmers by their action of setting fire to machinery and equipment that were "worshipped" by agriculturists, the Prime Minister said while inaugurating six projects under the 'Namami Gange' project to treat sewage in Uttarakhand.

His remarks came a day after a group of Indian Youth Congress workers set a tractor on fire in Delhi.

Taking a dig at the opposition, Modi alleged that those now opposing the new farm laws spoke in favour of implementing the Minimum Support Price (MSP) when in power but never did so.

"It has been done by our NDA government as per the MS Swaminathan Commission recommendations," the Prime Minister said.

He accused the opposition, without naming anyone, of "misleading the farmers over the MSP issue" and reiterated that the MSP would remain even as the farmers would get the freedom to sell their produce anywhere they wished to.

"Some persons are unable to tolerate this freedom (of farmers). One more way for them to earn black money has ended," Modi remarked.

Modi again sought to allay the fear over the new laws on farming sector and labour reforms.

"Many reforms related to farmers, labourers and health were brought during Parliament's Monsoon Session. All these reforms will only strengthen the labourers, youths, women, and farmers. The country is also witnessing how some people are opposing these just for the sake of opposing."

Parliament had passed The Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020; The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020; and Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill. After President Ram Nath Kovind gave assent to these, the government issued a gazette notification on these on Sunday.

The Prime Minister also took a swipe at the earlier governments for not doing enough to clean the Ganga river.

"In the past decades, big initiatives were taken up to clean the river. But those initiatives lacked public participation or farsightedness. As a consequence, the river was never cleaned."

It was an insult not to take the farmer's into confidence, in the first place. It was another insult to flout the rules of the house and then push the legislation to vote. How do you expect the farmer to survive if his livelihood is at stake; if the necessary steps to transition to a new system is not in place at the ground. This government is behaving like opposition to the opposition parties.

In India, if you wait for people's approval before every law is enacted then nothing gets done. Farmers have their elected representatives in the Parliament to consult on their behalf. If the law is so bad as you say it is then those elected representatives will be kicked out of power by thge same Farmers that voted them. That is just democracy.

Wow! if opposition protests that means insulting farmers.

No private companies will buy produce from farmers if it is not up to their standards. Farmers, largely depending on almighty and weather in India, won't be able to produce every time the right thing. It can work in an indoor farms, like they have in Israel or so. Any farmer or agriculturist would agree with it. A produce not up to the mark, a farmer has to sell it at distress price. And importantly, if he has incurred loan for buying seeds, fertilizers, equipment etc., his farm land mortgaged for the purpose, would be easy for loan sharks or banks to confiscate.

Till now, there was Govt., in between, through APMC used to ensure there is sufficient buying and minimum price is paid. Technically, this farm bill is a DeMo, GST, Covid fight that promises many things, but end of the day it is going to get a few rich more richer and middle class more poorer.

Sir, you mean nobody should protest if they found your policies inappropriate ? The moment they protest, they become black money seekers ? Why did BJP protest when they were in the opposition ? Because they too lost way to earn black money ? We the citizens should not protest when Petrol/Diesel prices increased ? Gas subsidy stopped ? LPG Prices increased ? Are you a PM of democratic India or you have made yourself a dictator of the nation ?

How did you stop the source black money Modiji ? By bringing it back from Swiss Banks ? By imposing Demonetization ? By getting all that is black into PM Cares Fund ?
