Daijiworld Media Network - Haveri (SP)

Haveri, Sep 30: The district has witnessed 16 teachers who were participating in the academic activities of the students including the ambitious 'Vidyagama' programme have fallen prey to Covid-19 till now. This has given rise to a sense of panic among the teacher community in the district.

Everyday the teachers get information about a couple of their colleagues getting coronavirus infection. So far, 28 teachers from here have tested positive. As a result, teaching the students has been hampered. It is said that most of the victims were the teachers who undertook house to house visits under the 'Vidyagama' programme. The demise of teachers and consequent shortage of teaching staff has the potential to mark the education system and many teachers are afraid of undertaking house visits, it is learnt.

There have also been claims that failure of the teachers to maintain social distance, aversion towards use of masks and sanitisers and overlooking the symptoms of the disease at an early stage also caused these deaths.

Most of the teachers who lost their lives were aged between 40 and 55. They had several years of service left when they passed away. Their presence would have benefitted thousands of students.
