Udupi: Penalising people ignoring coronavirus norms - DC enters field personally

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (HB/SP)

Udupi, Oct 1: Deputy commissioner (DC) of the district, G Jagadeesha, led an operation in which municipal commissioner Anand Kallolikar was present, on Wednesday September 30, against people violating COVID norms. Those who were found moving around without masks and not maintaining social distance, were fined.

Police sub-inspector and officers above that grade, panchayat development officers, municipal commissioners, health inspectors, sub divisional officer of Kundapur, tahsildars of all the taluks, chief officers of the town panchayats and municipalities, health officers taluk panchayat, executive officers, assistant police sub-inspectors, excise sub-inspectors and officers of excise department above that position, have now been vested with the powers to penalise people not following COVID 19 guidelines, and to initiate legal steps against them. Taking into consideration the need to stop the spread of COVID 19 infection, some of the officials have now been additionally empowered to take action against the violators.

The DC, who conducted the operation along with the municipal commissioner near the court road and commercial establishments, assisted by traffic police and other department officials, fined those who were found to be not wearing masks. A total fine of Rs 7,55,650 has been collected so far in the district till September 29.

Jagadeesha cautioned that this operation will be intensified in the coming days and programmes aimed at spreading awareness about the need to follow rules will also be undertaken. Many said that they are already facing financial constraints and held the action of the district administration in imposing fine on them as unjustified.

The DC Jagadeesha should have also stood at the Udupi City
Bus Stand in the evening to check out the crowd of labourers
from North Karnataka and some jobless locals simply idling
in and around the Bus Station - as all booze joints are located
in this vicinity from the door step of Gandhi Hospital to the
City Bus Stand. Why are the police not placed in this place?
This place is certainly not safe for ladies and families commuting
by bus as there are a lot of drunkards found and the Police is
not doing anything to contain the situation perhaps because the
Police themselves are all from the North of Karnataka.

    Sir,
Would request you to kindly go with your flying squad to any bar & see how blatantly all protocols are violated! What is the hindrance?
This cannot be possible without the connivance of authorities; also standalone wine shops are openly serving booze in dinghy rooms packed with tipplers!

Continuously wearing masks has proven to be dangerous due to oxygen deprivation; in open well ventilated places people should take in fresh air!

Fining people across the board is just show off!

Many people in the twin districts are still lax about following COVID protocol. I still see many people roaming around without masks. We cant take pride in calling ourselves smart or educated if we don't have common sense.
