Bangladesh overtaking India in per capita GDP sparks furore

New Delhi, Oct 14 (IANS): The social media is buzzing after the International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicted that Bangladesh will overtake India in per capita GDP for 2020.

As India's growth falls, amongst the most in the world, India is on track to fall below Bangladesh in terms of the per capita GDP. India will grow smartly next year, as per IMF.

As per the World Economic Outlook report of IMF released on Tuesday, India's per capita GDP is set to plunge by 10.5 percent to $1,877 this fiscal year ending March 31, 2021. This will make India the third poorest country in South Asia with only Pakistan and Nepal behind.

Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Maldives now have more per capita GDP than India.

Bangladesh's per capita GDP in dollar terms is expected to grow 4 per cent in 2020 to $1,888, overtaking India.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attacked the BJP government on this count. "Solid achievement of 6 years of BJP's hate-filled cultural nationalism: Bangladesh set to overtake India".

Stock market expert and Director Enam Holdings, Manish Chokhani tweeted, "Today's special. Both our neighbours marching ahead. We wish them well and hope our achievements meet our own aspirations!".

Chokhani added a clipping of Bangladesh overtaking India and China's booming economy and stock markets. The tweet was tagged to business and stock market leaders Samir Arora, Nilesh Shah, Anand Mahindra, Harsh Goenka and Harsh Mariwala.

Till five years back, India's per capita GDP was 40 per cent higher than Bangladesh. In the last five years, Bangladesh has grown three times the rate of India, at 9.1 per cent compared to 3.2 per cent for India, a much larger economy.

We have fallen far behind despite having the expertise & manpower, like you rightly pointed out, due to faulty policies of the government.
Guess who’s in charge there? Yes, the Yale degree holder who created a shambles in the HRD ministry prior to wreaking havoc in Textiles with her harebrained approach.

I do agree with you on one point:that textile workers in Bangladesh are often underpaid and overworked.
And to your question ‘who says Bangladesh has overtaken India?’ It’s the International Monetary Fund, which is the leading authority on financial matters of the world, which incidentally is headed by an Indian woman.

Some of the top brands have their garments manufactured in Bangladesh. And which is even sold here in the Middle East and elsewhere. Don't diss for the sake of it. You might have purchased a cheap brand garment which explains the quality performance. But that happens for all cheap brands irrespective of country of origin.

When economy contracts millions loose jobs, millions get added to poverty, millions starve for food, crime gets fillip, govt babus spend more in collecting bribes than doing duty, kids wont get to school, there gets a generation of uncertainty and injustice. In a country like India, each of the issues has potential to be riot and civil disobedience.

Modi led BJP govt policies in economic prospective were all monumental blunders, when it comes to social justice too it has failed miserably. End result he only has to fly with his newly owned 8,000cr planes across the planet, because within India he will be seeing worse kind of pain and suffering that to come.

Teen Biwi aur Dozen bache se Indian government ko kya nuksaan hai? As if the government feeds. As if the government is too bothered to give employment to the dozen bache?
Indian government itself is living in mercy of taxes, loans and borrowings.

Let's ask a middle class income family what is the benefit/return he/she gets out of the taxes he/she pays? Absolutely nothing. A big Zero.

One Afghani = 0.95 INR. Now Bangladesh overtaking in GDP.
Modiji should keep playing with more..(Peacock)

Bangladesh currency will be having more value than India...
Means those Bangladeshi 's will be more richer than Indians... Its because of the incapability of this Government to handle the GDP.. They are more interested in other issues for the party's gain instead of handling the country's economy.
They will now mislead the people with other isuues and make people fight among themselves .
    This is dirty politics.
