Udupi, Oct 15: Some news channels and print media recently posted an article on Udupi saree weaving for which the weavers society of Udupi Sarees, Talipady weavers society released a clarification on the same.
"Two and half years back Kadike Trust, Karkala initiated Udupi saree revival project in our Society. The trust has encouraged many weavers to return back to weaving profession and organized training programs for new weavers with Nabard grant. As a result, the total number of weavers at Talipady society has gone up to 23 from 8.
"After almost 25 years new and young weavers are joining the weaving profession. The trust has arranged ten looms in the society with the support of donors. The trust has helped in building the Brand Udupi saree creating awareness in social media platforms and other media. It has also created a beautiful brand designed by designer Sachidananda Mysore with the Udupi saree logo and weavers photo and name. The trust has helped us in marketing Udupi sarees throughout the country and abroad. As a result of all these efforts, demand for Udupi sarees increased incredibly. The trust has helped in designing sarees within framework of GI specifications.
"The trust has introduced natural dying saree with Charaka women's Co-op for the first time in the history of Udupi saree at Talipady Society. The trust has conducted natural dying training for dyers of society by Sangamitra Desai Vedchi with the support of Ananda Tulasi Vana Trust, Udupi. The trust has co-ordinated with GI offices in chennai and VTPC Bangalore in getting user authorization for GI tag to the Society. The trust has also helped to create short length Yaksha saree for the first time with the request of craft council Karnataka.
"The trust has been supporting individual weavers by giving medical aid, helping in building loom sheds, helping during natural calamity and pandemic. The trust is organizing awareness programs about social menaces for weavers in the society. The trust has long term plans for Udupi saree revival at Talipady weavers society and plans to build natural dying unit, solar lighting, and building this society as a heritage centre etc.
"Many buyers purchase sarees on bulk from us and make few changes in design as per their needs. The society has not taken any other person's help in designing sarees and marketing. Only the textile department and Kadike Trust is guiding and helping Talipady weavers society in above said matters," said a press note from Talipady weavers society.
