Mangalore, Apr 22: On Wednesday April 21, which happened to be the first day since the process of gram panchayat (GP) elections in the district was set into motion, 137 persons filed their nominations.

Out of 49 gram panchayats in Mangalore taluk, 17 nominations were received on the first day. A total of 938 GP members including 407 women, are to be elected from this taluk.

In Sullia taluk, 28 nominations were filed. 320 GP members including 153 women are to be chosen from the taluk.

In Puttur taluk, three women filed their nominations on Wednesday. Voters will elect 563 GP members including 249 women from this taluk.

In Bantwal, five people filed their nominations. A total of 804 GP members are to be elected from the taluk, out of which, 357 seats have been reserved for women.

In Beltangady, 84 nominations were received. A total of 583 representatives including 268 women candidates, are to be chosen from this taluk. Among the gram panchayats in the taluk, elections are not being held for Venoor and Arambody gram panchayats this time, as their terms have not expired.

April 28 happens to be the last day for filing of nominations, while May 3 will be the last day for their withdrawal.

In Udupi, 219 nominations were received on Wednesday. Filing of nominations began in Kundapur taluk on Wednesday, while in the other two taluks, it had begun on April 19. In total, 268 nominations have been filed in the district so far.
