Andhra's Prakasam police nab waylaying highway gang

Ongole, Oct 17 (IANS): Andhra Pradesh's Prakasam district police arrested six men for waylaying truck drivers on highway and robbing them of money.

Police arrested Perli Vijayawardhan (21), Pirangula Sundar (20), Vemu Praveen Kumar (23), Malaga Balaji (23), Vanga Sasikumar (20) and Pirangula Chalapathi Rao (21).

"The accused were committing crimes for money as they were addicted to cricket betting and other vices," said a police official.

Incidentally, on Monday, the arrested men waylaid a truck driver and robbed Rs 5,200 from him.

Following a complaint from the driver and on directives from Prakasam district Superintendent of Police (SP) Siddharth Kaushal, police formed four teams to hunt the robbers.

They alerted the mobile police teams and surrounding police stations through the newly formed integrated command control, which lead to the arrest of the six men at Kongapadu crossroads in Addanki.

Police managed to recover Rs 2,400 from the accused men.

In a separate case, the district police arrested two juveniles at Inkollu crossroads of Nagaluppalapadu to recover silver ornaments worth Rs 3.8 lakh in three temple thefts.

Meanwhile, Kaushal held a crime review meeting on Friday and instructed police officials to quickly complete investigation in crimes committed against women.

The southern state is shaken by two back-to-back cases in which a woman got burnt to death and another succumbed to stab injuries in Vijayawada.

The SP said the state government is closely monitoring crimes on women on a daily basis. He ordered his subordinates to start the investigation as soon as a case was registered to complete it within 60 days for filing a chargesheet.

Kaushal said the Ministry of Home Affairs is also reviewing cases on a daily basis.

He instructed all policemen in the district to learn Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) everyday to upload the details of every single investigation.

The IPS officer took stock of the registered cases to check how many were uploaded in CCTNS and directed his subordinates to upload the balance cases as soon as possible.
