UAE Students to be Trained on Emergency Response

Abu Dhabi, Apr 23 (IANS/WAM): School students in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will be trained on how to respond to risky and emergency situations, officials have said.

The Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) is conducting inspection checks in more than 300 schools in the region as part of a project on health and safety conditions at educational institutions.

"ADEC is committed to provide a high quality teaching and learning environment through regular maintenance of schools and state-of-the-art buildings," Mugheer Khamis Al-Khaili, ADEC director general said Thursday, adding that providing schools with the appropriate environment is an important element that supports the whole educational process.

There will be inspection of chemicals stored in labs, inspection of school building designs to check their capability in preventing electrical hazards and inspection of fire protection equipment.

Fire drills would be conducted in all schools, so that students would be familiar with the evacuation procedures. Air quality including air-conditioning filters and humidity levels would be checked so that the cause of allergies in students could be identified.

The schools will be equipped in accordance with international safety standards by the beginning of the new academic session, an official said.
