Puttur, Oct 20: The process of shifting the office of the district superintendent of police (SP) from Mangaluru to the city has been set rolling. It may get implemented by January next year.

After local MLA Sanjeeva Matandoor, met the home minister in this connection, a site has been set aside for the construction of this office at Bannur here.

Mangaluru city was brought under the police commissionerate in 2010. The entire Mangaluru revenue division limits fall under the police commissionerate. The then home minister, Dr V S Acharya, had promised to shift the office of the SP to Puttur.

After the MLA tool up the matter with home minister Basavaraj Bommai, chief minister, district in-charge minister and minister for municipal administration as well as the MP, the revenue department has set aside two acres of land at Bannur in the outskirts of the city. The process of transferring the site to the police department is under way.

Puttur is the second largest city in Dakshina Kannada after Mangaluru. It is centrally located as Beltangady, Bantwal, Sullia and Kadaba taluks are located close by and areas between Farangipet and Sampaje and up to Charmadi on the other side, in addition to Ishwaramangala, Jalsoor, Panaje and Vittal on Kerala border fall within the jurisdiction of the office of the SP. The police will be able to effectively handle situations as distance will be less from here. The department will be able to develop good relationships with the local people. There will be less pressure as distance to be covered in case of exigencies will be less.
