Mangaluru, Oct 21: In connection with an incident in which a couple had bought gold ornaments worth Rs seven lac from a jewellery store at Gurpur Kaikamba by issuing a fake cheque, a woman from Kuppepadavu involved with the crime was arrested from a house in Ullal Darmanagara by the Bajpe police.

The arrested woman happens to be Fareeda Begum. Her husband Rameez, who was her partner in the said crime, is absconding. Fareeda and Rameez are from Muttoor. They had issued a cheque drawn on a bank towards settling payment towards ornaments worth Rs 7.3 lac they had bought from a jewellery firm at Kaikamba. The fact that the jewellery store was taken for a ride came to the fore when the bank said that signature on the cheque did not match with the specimen signature lodged with them.

The jewellery store owner had filed complaint at Bajpe police station during the last week. The Bajpe police succeeded in finding out the whereabouts of Fareeda and arresting her. Bajpe police are now on the lookout for Rameez. It is said that the couple was planning to flee abroad. The arrested accused was produced in the court.
