Bengaluru, Oct 22: Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has said that the State Cabinet will take a decision on enhancing the compensation amounts to the people affected by floods in the northern Karnataka region.

Speaking to reporters in front of Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru on Thursday, the Chief Minister said he had just returned from conducting aerial survey of the flood ravaged districts of Kalaburgi, Yadgir, Raichuru, Vijayapura and Ballari districts.

“I have personally seen the extent of devastation. The severity of the floods due to heavy rains and also the inundation caused by the heavy release of waters from the Bhima river is far more severe than the situation last year,’’ he said.

Yediyurappa said he held discussions with the district authorities and had also held a review meeting with the officials at Kalaburgi along with Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai and other local legislators.

He said the extent of damages and losses was yet to be assessed and it will be done after the situation returned to normalcy and the district officials send their reports.

The State Government will submit a detailed report to the Centre for sanctioning funds for taking up relief and rehabilitation. “I have already spoken to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and he has promised all assistance and support from the Centre,’’ he said.

In the meanwhile, the State Government has released necessary funds to the deputy commissioners of the affected districts, he said pointing out availability of funds was not a problem.
