Udupi, Oct 24: We should get women and children educated, help them get jobs and make them financially independent, said national women’s commission member, Shyamala Kunder.

She was speaking at the district level progress review meeting held at the district panchayat auditorium here on Friday.

“We should ensure that none of the children is deprived of education. The government has passed several schemes for the welfare of women and children. Those should be implemented 100%,” she said.

“The women and children who are subjected to atrocities should be made aware to which authority they should complain. They should be pacified, filled with courage and provided legal aid. Internal complaint committees should be formed mandatorily in all the government and private organizations. Women should be informed about them,” she said.

She commended the work conducted by the district administration to prevent hardship to women and children during the lockdown period.

“Women, school and college students should be provided additional awareness about cybercrimes. A brochure on how to prevent them from becoming victims of cybercrimes should be printed and distributed. Awareness programmes to prevent female students from becoming victims of drug addiction should be held. The police department should undertake extra inspections over drug peddling,” she said.

“28 cases are registered in Sakhi One stop centre in the district from December 19 to August 28. 16 cases out of them are disposed of. Seven cases are in the court and one case is in the consultation stage. 8 cases are registered under the protection of women from domestic violence Act. Five cases are disposed of after consultation. Three cases are pending. Compensation of Rs 25,000 is disbursed under Abhaya fund and Rs 5,000 each are disbursed in two other cases. Rs 10.20 crore are spent on 23,865 beneficiaries under Matra Vandana scheme. Rs 1.54 are paid to 4,286 beneficiaries this year,” she said.

Listening to the grievances of Asha and Anganwadi workers in the district, she said that the matter will be brought to the notice of the centre.
