Mangalore, Apr 28: Business establishments either private or government owned should realize the need of restructuring or revamping their business establishments which is the first step towards the Business Process Re-engineering, said Albert W D Souza, Managing Director of Printania Offeset Pvt Limited, Mumbai. He was delivering a talk on Business Process Re-Engineering held at SDM College of Business Management.
Giving an apt quote to with the topic “to win the race run all that you can but to reach elsewhere you have to double the speed”, he said “Business Process Re-engineering actually means restructuring or revamping current establishment. This revamping is necessary for every sector by it private or government. However, the moment of realization by the management on the need to change or restructure is very important for any establishment. Revamping the whole system from the first activity to the end is BPR”.
Albert D Souza based his talk on many examples including that of a paper mill, which, he said took a major a major decision to revamp after realizing the company’s production had dwindled over a period of time. “By going in for automation in a section of the mill the company was able to enhance its production within a month of its implementation. This was possible only because the company opted for BPR after realizing the need to do so”, he opined.
Giving the example of his own organization he said he had to take an important decision of investing about 20 crores which is quite a high investment to a single ownership company, to enter into an unfamiliar area and into a new market of business unknown or unheard, when the printing business in general went on shrinking owing to communication revolution. He also gave the example of Indian Railway or Indian Premier League (IPL) and stated that the turn around of these is the result of Business Process Re-Engineering (BPR). “Indian Railways which was always in the red saw a huge turnaround by going for specific area revamping by adding additional coaches and by going for platform extension only in strategic location. The railways also gave a bonus to the cargo movers and cargo clearance was expedited by extending the cargo clearance hours. Implementing these major decisions resulted in increasing the railway revenue by 20% which was a major achievement” he pointed out.
Referring to the popularity of IPL Albert D Souza stated that innovative marketing of cricket has successfully transformed cricket from a sport into an entertainment by resorting to BPR. He said for single ownership companies BPR would call for going in for partnership or for partnership companies into private limited or public limited companies when the business makes a quantum jump from the existing scale.
He summarized the concept of BPR as combining several jobs into one, allowing workers to take decision, taking stakeholders into confidence, performing work where it makes most sense and reducing checks and controls.
Dr K Devaraj, Principal of SDM College of Business Management who presided over the function stated that the ultimate aim of any business house is growth. “There is no growth without innovation and no growth without tradition”, he stated. He also stated that KSRTC took a brave decision by going in for a BPR and branding its products which created a niche for itself. He called for creating a win-win situation to make the best of the opportunities.
