Bengaluru, Nov 10: The government, which was reprimanded by the high court for allowing politicians and celebrities to go scot free after violating coronavirus guidelines, while imposing fines on the general public, buckled under pressure and imposed fines on MP Tejasvi Surya, and actor Darshan.

A bench of the state high court presided over by Chief Justice A S Oka, heard a public interest litigation which was filed regarding well-known people not being fined for corona rule violations by the officials, on Monday November 9. The government which was dilly-dallying in the matter during the last several hearings, had no other way but to impose fines or register first information reports against these popular figures.

After he was appointed as the president of BJP national Yuva Morcha, Tejasvi Surya had returned to the city on September 30. He had been taken in a procession in an open vehicle from the airport to the BJP office. In the case, COVID guidelines were violated, the petition filed in the high court had claimed. The government told the high court that it had imposed a fine of Rs 250 on Tejasvi Surya.

In the case pertaining to violation of corona guidelines by actor Darshan during the bypoll campaigning, a non-cognizable report was registered against him, and a fine of Rs 250 was collected. The government said in its report that 684 people have been fined for violating coronavirus guidelines so far.
