India enters into technical recession for first time: RBI Report

Mumbai, Nov 12 (IANS): India has technically entered into a recession with a likely contraction in its GDP during the July-September period, according to a report by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

RBI's Economic Activity Index estimates that India's GDP growth for the second quarter of the current financial year was negative and the GDP contracted by 8.6 per cent during the quarter.

"India has entered into a technical recession in the first half of 2020-21 for the first time in its history with Q2:2020-21 likely to record the second successive quarter of GDP contraction," it said.

The contraction is ebbing with gradual normalisation in activities and expected to be short-lived.

The RBI report said that at a time when global economic activity is besieged by the outbreak of the second wave of Covid-19, incoming data for the month of October 2020 have brightened the near-term outlook for the Indian economy and stirred up consumer and business confidence.

"Since the assessment of the performance of the Indian economy in the first half of 2020-21 that was presented in the Monetary Policy Report of October 2020, several developments point to a window of respite opening up and an unshackling of economic activity from the grip of Covid-19 as the festival season sets in," it said.

Imran Khan was lobbying day and night with the G-20 nations to get debt relief for developing nations - and we mocked him and called him a beggar. Perhaps it's time for Nirmala and Modi to set aside their egos and seek help and aid from the rich countries.

    Exactly !

In the initial years of BJP, as a routine practice, WB loan was repaid and a big announcement was being made so Bhakts elated. In the aftermath, forget repayment, days have come to go begging.

BJP winning state elections, selling pakodas or exploiting poor farmers is definitely not the solution to our economic problems. The reality on the ground is that, after just 6 short years of Modi's misrule, we have fallen behind Bangladesh in per capita GDP and behind Pakistan on the Global Hunger Index list.

Our economic collapse is the worse in its 74-year history. On top of that, 80 crore people now need free food grains just to stay alive.

BJP is idea of economy only depend on share market up and downs. However Indian economy is a mixed economy which is formal and informal. Most of the people earning day today for their living by doing daily wage job and they are not counted in BJP idea of economy. That is the main reason FM speak something and reality is different

Ruling India and ensure the progress and achieve highest benefits and improving our economy is not an ordinary task like taking care of the State of Gujarat. Building the country on the basis Gujarat model his nothing but Fake affords and fooling people. The poor class and farmers would not understand what is country's economy. Only qualified, economist would realize where the set back lies. Unlike present Finance minister and her ego.

Our collapsed economy will not revive as long as Modi government is in power, They have no capability and their only obsession is Muslims and Mandir.

Just look at their past actions like Demonetization mess, Flop GST, Anti-Farner bill, High Unemployment, Flop Make in India, Fake 100 newly built smart cities (Smart city is not fixing existing cities)

    Oh yes, Rajesh,

Thereafter, we both will carry a 'Thippi' and go to Bangladesh to beg for food, OK ?? Hunger is equal to all, it does not differentiate between party affiliations, you see ? You seal your lips while voting. Don't question whether BJP is bent only on defeating Congress, never question what happened to the 8.5% growth kept constant by the earliergovernment while handing over the reins in2014.

Dont hype things up. The Covid 19 was one of the big reasons for the negative rate. Dont think GDP numbers are the only yardsticks of development.

Hello... do you think people went into hibernation just because the Tea-seller promised 'Governance with a difference' ??? I don't know about you, but I was quite vigilant during Dec. 2019, when the GDP had hit negative count. Covid-19 just a cap on all the misdeeds of the government to cover up the already sunk economy.

Be bold and accept the failure than attributing the results to the Pandemic. Why repairable measures weren't taken up right from the time it started sliding down ?? How come Bangladesh recovered but India slid further down ??

Mr Prasad. It does. Let the population come down. then the hungry mouths also comes down. Did your Manmohan have a population policy?. What will happen to our cities in about 20 years time? is there enough water to cater to cities burgeoning population? our children may die of thirst too.

Population control ??? Do you have statistics of the times of MMS (10 years) and Modi'a time (6 years) that are way too apart in headcount ??? What did Modi do that MMS didn't ?? How come at MMS' time inflation, petrol /LPG was cheaper but at Modi's time it shot up ?? Were 10 year-old children of MMS tenure started eating so much ??

Regardless, is population explosion only India's problem, or Pak/Bangla too have it ?? How could Bangla fight the pandemic but India couldn't ??

Are Bangladeshi leaders more intelligent but Indians aren't ??

Mr Deshabhakth, you seem to be infatuated with numbers. We care for the shrinking physical spaces. this is not measured in GDP numbers or growth rate. what to do with money when you are living in cities with lack of water and extensive pollution. if people were so disturbed, people would have thrown the incumbent government in Bihar. The only chance of people getting a uniform civil code and population bill is through current government.these are my priorities maybe not yours.
