Mangalore, May 8: Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) supported contestants in the fray for the gram panchayat election will only divide the votes cast by the Muslim community and in turn indirectly help communal party like BJP, said Moideen Bava, president of District Congress Minority Committee.
Speaking at a press meet in district Congress office, he said that the SDPI has backed some of the contestants, mostly in the areas where the voters from Muslim community are in large numbers. It will only divide the Muslim votes and will help communal party like BJP, he observed. Most of the leaders in SDPI are not confident of winning and hence will only contribute to dividing votes, he added.
The Muslim community has always supported Congress party for its secular stand, he said adding that SDPI participation will only affect the Congress. He called on the voters to undertsnd the ploy and support congress.
Congress leaders Ivan D’Souza, Gretta Rebello, B K Idinabba and Khalid Yousuf among others were present.
