Gang who sold infants to childless couples busted, 8 nabbed

New Delhi, Nov 25 (IANS): Eight accused involved in an an organised child trafficking racket have been arrested by Delhi Police's Crime Branch, police said on Wednesday.

The gang had a typical modus operandi, visiting private IVF centres and hospitals to collect details of couples not having children. After the IVF procedure failed for such couples, gang members lured them into buying babies, stating that the adoption process through legal means may be lengthy and complicated. The entire gang has confessed to selling many babies.

The police got a clue of the gang after a woman complained that her three month old boy was kidnapped by a woman from Moti Bagh gurudwara on October 22.

"An unknown woman came to her and started conversation with her and she offered her to take care of her son. She handed over her son to that woman and went to the gate of gurudwara to take her meal. After some time when she returned, she found that the unknown lady had gone with her son," DCP, Crime Branch, Monika Bhardwaj said.

In November, the Crime Branch recovered this infant from Palam area, as well as another one and a half year old from Tilak Nagar.

"Pinki was the woman who has stolen/kidnapped the baby from outside Gurudwara Moti Bagh. She has confessed to her crime," the DCP added.

Gopal, a resident of Shakur Basti, was the main accused and has also been arrested.

Further investigation is on to find out the gang's links to IVF centres and nursing homes to ascertain their role in the illegal trafficking.
