Udupi, Dec 3: Seven fishermen from here who were working on a boat, 'Mathura', owned by Tarnath Kunder from Malpe, were rescued with the help of modern communication technology recently.
Vinod Harikanth, Mahesh, Lokesh, Shekhar, Gangadhar Mogera, Nagappa Harikanth and Anit Gatbir Harikanth had left for deep sea fishing. The boat faced grave danger on November 26 at Maharashtra coast. The people on another boat who noticed these fishermen in distress, immediately contacted the coastal security force and boat owner by using the BSNL Skylo 2-way technology. The rescuers could identify the exact location of the boat with the help of the two-way communication system.
In a release, Taranath Kumder, owner of Mathura boat which drowned, said that he is happy that the seven fishermen have come back. He said that because of modern technology employed by the other boat, they heard the pleas for help and came to rescue the fishermen in danger. He wished that such equipment are made available to all the boats.
Ganesh K, an official of fisheries department said that wherever satellite-based nag]navigation system is in place, they get connected to the mobile phones of the fishermen in case of danger, and distress signals can be sent. He said that such technology also helps in assessing the quantum of available fish in the area.
