Bengaluru, Dec 3: Minister for primary and secondary education, S Suresh Kumar, held a meeting with the legislators representing teachers and graduates constituencies here on Wednesday December 2 to elicit their views on the desirability of reopening of schools.

The legislators were unanimous in their opinion that in the best interests of the future of the students, the schools should be reopened immediately.

The MLCs said at the meeting held at the integrated education hall that students from rural areas, particularly those studying in government schools, are deprived of education due to the closure of schools. They said that this has been giving rise to several social problems.

"In the first phase, second PU and SSLC classes should be started. Once the schools are started, several problems like teachers on contract basis will be resolved. As the children keep away from school for several months, they grow disinterested in learning and become victims of depression. Already many rural children are working as coolies. Many have succumbed to the menace of child marriage. Therefore, it is better to open the schools," they said.

The minister said that a decision will be taken about the opening of SSLC and PU classes after obtaining the opinion of the state Covid technical advisory committee.
