PM positive on bypass road between Surathkal, Mangaluru

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Dec 5: Mangaluru Taluk Nagarika Samiti had proposed to the office of the Prime Minister (PM) to lay separate bypass road between Surathkal and the city in order to reduce the vehicular density on national highway 66. President of the Samiti, Subhaschandra Shetty, said that the PM's office has positively responded to the proposal and sought a detailed report on the proposal from the National Highways Authority of India.

"The problem of density of traffic is getting worse day by day on national highway 66 between the city and Surathkal. Heavy vehicles going to mega industries are mainly responsible for this situation. The Samiti has been striving to solve this issue. It had taken up the issue through the local people's representatives many a time during the last three years, but there was no progress. Therefore, we had written to the Prime Minister. The PM's office, on November 12, asked the highways department to take necessary steps," he stated.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi

He said that the proposal of the committee involves bypass road from national highway 66 via NITK, Madhya, Bala, Bajpe and Polali arch to reach the highway 75 to Bengaluru. All the industrial vehicles should be diverted from this bypass road towards Udupi, Mumbai and Bengaluru as well as Kerala. This will ease traffic congestion on the highway between Suratkal and the city and the road will not be damaged, he said, adding that these things had been informed to the PM through the letter. He added that the highway department has informed the PM's office that Greenfield survey for the bypass project has been started and in progress.

Shetty warned that the Samiti will resort to the route of confrontation if the highways authority fails to properly respond to the bypass proposal.

If city to be protected environmentally or traffic of NH 66 not only this one but two more by pass or circular free ways required. One from the coastal from Karwar and other from Padubidri. Because traffic jams in Padubidri town would be a constant traffic hassel. By pass from Padubidri karkala road to NITK by pass would be advisable for heavy traffic. Which could be connected to udupi too by a small by pass. So that from udupi to Bangalore & Kerala direct heavyweight traffic route can be made with least expenditure. Tourism development and eco friendly agricultural products can be grown & marketed easily.

Very good move. Am surprised by the immediate response from PM's office. Sometimes I feel is it a eye wash? But taking it a possible reality, how it is feasible to execute owing to the terrain we are in. The present scenario in many of the state highways and National highways are in a pathetic condition. Maintenance of the existing roads should be given more priority. New projects like the one samiti put forth is a welcome step towards modernization. Good luck.

Better to make helicopters to avoid unnecessary traffic and reach faster. PM vision for many smart cities and he will make that happen at least on documents. Many promises were made on speaeches and covid got in between. Otherwise many would have received deposits and bullet train. He still has pradhan mantri schemes to deliver to common man. For sure he will.do it.best PM ever keep his promises. This road work is a minor issue for him. It will be done soon. Like this PM.

We have been waiting for last 10 years to get the Karkala-Moodabidri-Nantoor Circle two lane highway and finally got a new Bridge at Gurpur. The remaining stretch of this road may take another couple of decades and to the new Kundapura-Mangalore Bypass Highway may realise by 2121. Surathkal Tollgate is the best example of NHAI Management.....

Existing road passing thro Kottara, KPT, Nanthoor and Pumowell can be decongested with a flyover at Nanthoor and proposed bypass with a round about alignment shall be dropped. It is not worth spending 2800 Crores and present cost benefit analysis has inherent flaws. It seems, some vested interests are working overtime for this national waste......!

What happened to Nalin’s ring road from Mulki to Thokottu via Kinnigoli, Bajpe, Polali & BC Road? If such bypasses were pre-planned then what was the need to construct flyovers at Surathkal, Kulur, Pumpwell, etc. wasting crores of taxpayers’ money?

A news item from 4th september 2019 quoting our MP Nalinji said that.
"The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has finalised the feasibility study and tentative alignment for the proposed 77-km four-lane Mangaluru City bypass between Mulki and Thokkottu via Kinnigoli, Kateel, Bajpe, Kaikamba, B.C. Road, Melkar andMudipu.
Estimated to cost about ₹ 2,800 crore under engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) mode, the project is likely tobe completed by 2021, he said.

In march 2016 Mr Gadkari (Union Minister for Surface Transport, Highways )said that he gave in-principal approval for all three projects. He said that the 44-km long stretch from Karkala to Moodbidri to BC Road will be developed at a cost of Rs 220 crore,51 -km long BC Road -Kaikamba-Kateel-Mulki road will be developed at a cost of Rs 255 crore. The 28-km long four-laning of Thokkottu-Mudipu-Melkar stretch will be taken up at a cost of Rs280 crore.

Does the Samithi or the PM's office not aware of these projects or promises?

If it is so easy to get PM's attention the samiti can as well bring the pitiful condition of Mangalore Hassan highway to his attention. May be the samiti can achieve what Nitin Gadkari or Kateel could not.

When approaching someone with our problems, please have solutions at hand. From where this bypass road will pass? Better construct separate parallel highway connecting kundapur and Mangalore. There is no planning at all while constructing roads. The state highway near udupi city Bus stand has been upgraded to national highway with out considering traffic density at that place.
