Sense of Gloom Prevails in Coastal Districts...

    Pics by Dayananda Kukkaje
    Daijiworld Media Network - (FR)

Mangalore, May 25: In the coastal districts of Mangalore and Udupi there is still a pall of gloom  everywhere as the family members, relatives, friends and the general public are yet to come to terms with the tragic incident of the air crash in Mangalore in which 158 people perished on Saturday.  The shell-shocked people are unable to even think that such a tragedy could happen in Mangalore.  The scene at the crash site and at the Wenlock hospitals is really heart rending one as relatives are grappling with the loss of their loved ones and trying to identify the charred bodies to perform the last rites, which is proving to be an uphill task.  The scene at the district hospital is sure to melt the hearts of anyone.  Family members and relatives have been thronging to the District Wenlock hospital crying desperately in search of their loved ones without bothering about water, food, rest or sleep. Their swollen faces sleep-deprived eyes and crumpled clothes telltale the sad situation of their helplessness in coming to grapple with the tragedy.

The general atmosphere in and around the coastal districts is very depressing and everywhere people seems to be talking about the tragedy sympathizing with the families which lost their loved ones.  One can just imagine the fate of the households and their family members which lost multiple lives in the ghastly incident.   Friends, relatives, acquaintances, neighbours and the general public irrespective of caste, creed or religion have visited the families of victims to express their condolences and share their grief.  The spontaneity with which the civilians of Mangalore responded in rendered their selfless service in the rescue operations risking their own lives, safety or exhaustion is commendable. The fact that a majority of the force throughout the rescue operations was civillian speaks volumes of the Good Samaritan nature of Mangaloreans, which is the only consolation many of the grief stricken families could have.

    Moodubelle - Udupi

    Kulshekar - Mangalore

While not able to anything more the citizens along with their elected representatives and NGO’s took out a peace march yesterday in the city to express condolences and solidarity with the bereaved families.  It was gratifying to note that the district administration, the police force  and the elected representatives taking over the responsibility  of visiting the crash site and the hospital to provide  solace to the grief stricken families and oversee the rescue operations and other arrangements. The district administration made arrangements to provide food and water to those who have been waiting at the hospitals for the bodies.  Volunteers were seen distributing water bottles to the sorrowing families. Distrinct-in-charge minister J Krishna Palemar even vented his anger against some international channel for wrong bytes from the relatives of victims.  Many public functions were cancelled and some even toned down the celebrations to express their solidarity with the families of victims.

The ordeal of the families and relatives of some of the dead is not over yet as they are not able to recognized the bodies which are charred beyond recognition.  The doctors at the hospital are doing their best to cope with the enormity of the situation.  Finally they are waiting for the DNA tests to be done to identify the bodies, which are the only course left to handover the bodies to the rightful claimants.

Mangaloreans are known for their resilience especially when odds are pitted against them.  The ghastly tragedy has shown the humanness we all have.  Amidst the catastrophe Mangaloreans faced last Saturday, there is a glimmer of hope that has emerged that we all have similar feelings, pain and grief which is binds us all together, especially when the need arises.

Noted the remark contents from across the viewers, and we see that the Aviation Industry has either in person, or as an Organization, has ignored the core Factor of RELIABILITY.
Mr. ROLAND SALINS seems to be very Professional. What Mr. Salins says is absolutely Correct in prosessional sense.

Take, if the Capt./Polot announces that he is going to take-off with 99.999% Reliability he would have no Passangers as well as airline Service Crew members left with him unless 100% RELIABILITY is ensured before take-off.

Nevertheless, even if the Capt./Piolt gets a hint or feel of even a lesser lapse than 0.001% Reliability in his aircraft systems he announces an instant landing at the nearest Airport for that safety lapse of lesser than 0.001% which is a Potential Threat leading to Multi Billion dollars PLUS un-quantifyable, un-measurable & un- accountable Value of Lost Lives. Thanks to Mr. Salins, an Aeronautical Engineer with Crisis Management & Damage Control expert & Specialist. Such personnel should be called and given a position of POWER & Authority for genuine developments.

There is nothing else then to offer my deepest condolences to victims of aircrash at Mangalore. I am frequent traveller to Manglore mainly thru AIE.Though accidents do happen in daily life , The print and visual media coverage was totally not in good ethics showing dead/burnt bodies of victims and judgeing the cause of accident . Meanwhile we shall appreicate concern shown by all authorites and peoples around extending best possible help to rescuce and to depenedents. No doubt it is scary when aircrafts approch landing and take sharp turn before touching down on runway. I am not able to understand why they can not approch stright like they land in other airports. It is sad it is locals who noticed crash first and not the authorites in the airport. With so many theories floated by media and experts as a common man i belive it is confusion to land or to take off again in the mind of pilot could have contributed to disaster.Though it was scary to fly back on same airlines after the accident all fears gone once I boarded the aircraft on my return journey couple days back. I am sure safety standards will be increased by all airlines. Meanwhile let us hope for best and afe journey for all travellers in future

Mr.KRISH MOHAN THANKS FOR YOUR VALUABLE INFORMATION COMMENTS, STATED THAT COMMUNICATION EQUIPMENTS OF FLIGHT WILL NOT EFFECT BY MOBILE PHONES SO WHY WE HAVE THIS PRACTICE DURING LANDING,TAKE-OFF AND BRIEFING BY FLIGHT CREW. AS PER YOUR COMMENT PILOT AND PLANE CERTIFIED FOR NON-PRECISION APPROACH (VOR/NDB/GPS) PILOTS USUALLY LAND ON VISUAL BASE. HERE I HAVE DOUBT FOR ON VISUAL BASE PILOTS EYE SIGHT SHOULD BE CONSIDER. DO WE HAVE PILOT EYE SIGHT REPORT ( DUE TO PILOT Mr.ZLATKO GLUSCIA 53 YEAR OLD). I DON'T THINK IT ONLY PILOT ERROR, WHAT ABOUT AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLER?. WHETHER ON DUTY PERSON SKILLED? IF SKILLED WHAT ABOUT CO-ORDINATION ? WHAT LEVEL CO-ORDINATION CARRIED OUT? IF ATC FOUND PILOT OVERSHOOTED RUNWAY, DO WE HAVE RECORDED PROOF THAT ATC WARNED PILOT THAT YOU OVERSHOOTED RUNWAY, AND ADVICED FOR FURTHER ACTION.

Precision Approaches are not needed, every plane and pilot is certified for non precision approaches. The "Minimums" for a Non Precision Approaches (VOR/NDB/GPS etc.) are more than Precision Approach(ILS). If the sky is clear, Pilots usually land using Visual.

As a pilot and an electronics engineer, I would like say that Mobile phones had nothing to do with this. Even if people in every seat were using their mobile phones, it will NOT affect the Instruments. The use of banning mobile phones started in the US, so that Airlines can make people use the "Seat Phone" and charge them $10 per minute. I personally do not want people to use mobile phone in a plane/bus/train because of noise pollution. Think about this, if a mobile phone can cause a plane to crash, then you should ban all mobile phones in the vicinity of an airport. We should wait for the Official inquiry to complete to know the cause(s). I hate to say this, but statistics heavily weighs towards "Pilot Error" in most accident investigation.

MAY GOD BLESS FAMILIES, RELATIVES,OF TRAGIC CALAMITY VICTIMS PROVIDE THE COURAGE & ENDURANCE & GIVE THEM STRENGTH TO OVERCOME THIS GRIEF. INVESTIGATIONS BY HIGH LEVEL OR EXPERTS CANNOT BRING THE DEAD TO LIFE ONLY RESULT WILL BE CAN AVOID FUTURE TRAGEDIES, OF MISTAKES OF HUMAN ERROR, LACK OF COMMUNICATION, OR OVERCOME PROUD OF FANCY TABLE TOP RUNWAY. FIRST OF ALL RELATED AUTHORITIES DO THEY HAVE PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE REPORT AND CORRECTIVE MAINTENANCE REPORT OF CHECK OF TYRES, BRAKING SYSTEM, IGV (INLET GUIDE VANE), AUTOMATION & SENSORS WHICH SUPPOSED TO DO DUBAI BEFORE LEAVE & WHETHER IS IT ENDORSED & COUNTER SIGNED BY PILOT. AS PER AUTHORITIES PILOTS TAKEN 3 1/2DAYS REST ARE THEY SURE DID THEY HAVE 3 1/2DAY REST MONITORING CHART. ONE MORE POINT WE HAVE TO CONSIDER AUTHORITIES SHOULD IMPLEMENT STRICTLY PROHIBITED RULE ON MOBILE PHONE & ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENTS USAGE DURING LANDING & TAKE OFF DUE TO SIGNALS INTERUPT WITH COMMUNICATION EQUIPMENT FREQUENCY.

It's the SAD story - but, it's also a NAKED TRUTH that LIFE on earth is TEMPORARY.

When this kind of accidents occurs people have some strange feeling and strange views.

I am surprised to see that some people comments on the AIRPORT and others on the MOBILE Phones, Pilot, Politics etc.

However, my giving this kind of suggestion they are just making the like of OTHERs touch.

UNNECESSARY things - They just know something about Mobile phones and Technology and they give their suggestions. They must know that Mobile phones doesn't do anything to get the plane crashed.

Mangalore Airport is running since many years and they cannot blame the same.

      What will you do ?
Do you seal the whole Airport.
Do you make another billions to construct and renovate the Airport ?
This will make extra burden/ price increase.

Also, now a days people are unnecessarily installing many things in the name of Anti-Terrorism.

Remember, human beings are living on earth since infinite times and it continue.
The MORAL is don't blame others for accidents, don't give unnecessary suggestions that will increase prices.
Don't give extra suggestion in the name of SECURITY.

If you think SECURITY is such a concern then built something that will allow you to live FOREVER in this WORLD.

I am 100% sure you cannot do this, even whole population of world cannot do this.

Just HELP the POOR and service the HUMANITY. Do good things and SUPPORT goodness.

After reading various comments,I too agree that one of the reasons for this disaster could be use of mobile phones.
I have a suggestion, All the airlines should make it mandatory that one should deposit their mobile phones or any other electronic gadjets which may hinder function of sophesticated planes computer system in a specially made pouches against a token to claim it while getting down. I know it is time consuming but, worth a millions time if it saves prescious lives.

Looking at the Pictures and hearing the cries of the families who have lost their dear ones is really Painful and I pray to Almighty God that he may give courage and strength to all who have lost their loved ones in this Air crash. I believe that the Aviation Authorities should look into the matter of the the table top strip for Landing, was it not for the deep Valley all the passengers would be alive today. I hope the Govt will take immediate action to rectify and arrange a better runway so that no more lives may be lost.

I feel the Bajpe airport disaster was waiting to happen. The plane overshoot the runway . There might have been many reasons including the pilots error . But before blaming the pilots i feel the "table top ' runway is the main cause of the disaster I feel the goverment should make immediate steps to icrease the length of runway and make better landing facilities at Mangalore

This could be the pilot's fault. He completely misjudged the landing distance. He might have landed the flight almost at the end of runway, where it was too late to bring the flight under control(he might have freaked out too).

It is very scary to fly to Bajpe now. Every time a family member flies to M'lore we have to hold our breadth & wait. So much restriction for those Pilots also. Let them change the runway. Airport is O.K. direction of runway needs to be changed. It shouldn't be facing the death trap - The valley down.

If the Pilot misses the touchdown point by few hundred meters he's sure to fall down to the valley. That's why the plane exploded, because of the impact of falling so deep. If it was a flat surface Pilot could have easily brought it to halt. It's high time authorities revise the runway issue & build a new one. Safety is important, not money.

Its Quite easy for people everywhere blaming everyone when disaster like this takes place.I have been traveling frequently. I tell you something... the frequency of the cell phone when its used causes the reading instruments in the cockpit go wrong. I have seen this happening in a private small craft few times abroad.I am sure few people on the plane must have used the cell phone or turned the power on...please do not blame on Pilot, runway and staff and whatnot..please take patience.let them find the cause...lets not judge them prematurely. My beloved people please pray for the future of our people and children as they fly through any of these airports. Very tragic.... and that too our airport Bajpe... so many years we have been flying in and out of that very airport and only now that the tragedy has occurred do we know that Bajpe has always been a tricky airport to land in. This turns your guts in n out at the very thought of landing there BUT then with the holiday season and all sectors flying full capacity, we have no alternative but fly direct to that very airport on the same airline.... only pray to the almighty for eternal peace to the departed souls and that such an incident never occurs in the future....

I had colleagues and their children flying out of Bajpe on that very day and I was really thinking about the tension and turmoil they would have gone thru following the disaster. We pray to the Almighty for all travellers.

AS per our human beings everybody will fall in mistakes. So we cant blame only to Pilot. NO one ready to die like this who love their husband/wife/children/parents. There is a strong reason where this such a great experienced pilot came under this situation. Only the 'Black Box' will tell real truth what exactly happened and will help to upgrade this International Air port. Experience is not not enough to lead everything but language proficiency and communication skills is very very important. now the only solution is to stop using bigger aircraft like 737s and use the ATRs, Bombadiers etc .. AI just have many more flights to cater to the large numbers of passengers.

John - A very good & important point here. People start using their mobiles even before the plane has touched down, even stand up and try to take their baggage out. I've even seen near misses with bags falling off and missing passengers, due to the calous approach of a few passengers.
Let's wait for the investigation, now that the 'Black Box" is found & Pray that it's not because of somebodys mobile signal disturbing the sensitive instruments in the plane. The authorities should get strict on usage of mobiles and electronic instruments while landing and takeoff, just like one cannot use the word 'Bomb' inside the airport, if you do you are in the slammer...thats it.

Oh! my God, can't see the pictures of departed and the mourning family members as the eyes were filled with tears.

Every one in the plane were anxious, full of new planning, hopes and above all meeting and staying with their loved one's for a month or more. All were happy when the plane landed in Mangalore airport and within few hours all were thinking that they will meet their family's. But fate changed the face of the happiness and anxiety as a result the unbelievable tragedy happened and all perished within a fraction of seconds.

Even I too used to offer a small prayer after landing at Bajpe airport as always landing is scary and one big jerk used to experience.

Oh! Lord give the strength and courage to all the families who have lost their loved one's and grant the eternal peace for all the departed souls. Lord, Protect and guard everyone as such things never ever should happen in any one's life. Amen.

Its really heartbreaking to see the pictures of the funerals which are taking place in Mangalore and Kerala. They are all our brothers and sisters who have given up their lives just to make our political leaders open their eyes and realize TABLE TOP RUNWAY is a very fancy name given to play with our lives . Yet they claim after this disaster that the runway is very safe and meets international standards. Are they waiting to have another similar disaster to confirm that this runway is not safe.Cant Mangalore be provided with a long enough runway to ensure our citezens and foreign tourists feel safe. As Indians dont we have the right to come and visit our family memebers after a year or even 2 or 3 years and not worry about our runways.

OR is AIR INDIA AFRAID OF COMPETITORS incase a longer runway is built in Mangalore which will give way for major airlines to take a shre of the market. As Indians either living in India or overseas , we pay taxes every single year and we should not allow the civil avaition ministry to this case as pilot error and move on.Lessons learnt we need a safe and long enough runway to avert any future disaster like this even if the pilot happens to overshoot the aircraft by 2000 feet .We DO NOT WANT TO SEE ANY SIMILAR CRASH EVER AGAIN IN THE HISTORY OF OUR NATION . God Bless the departed souls and may their souls Rest In Peace. We pray that the families get enough courageto bear this shocking loss of their near and dear ones in this horrific tragedy

BOYCOTT BAJPE AIRPORT. All International Airport should have provision to cover marginal errors by Pilot. Due to the fact that the airport is a table top airport, there was no scope for Pilot to manoeuvre the flight & eventually it had to cave down into the gorge. A Boeing 737 with a maximum landing weight requires 6,000-ft of runway for landing. For take off too, it requires 6,000 feet but that is based on several factors such as weight, wind, temperature and runway conditions.

“Mangalore airport has a 8,000-ft-long runway. The pilots of that plane may not have had sufficient landing distance if they touched down late with high speed,’’ he said.

Although it is possible to take off even after the wheels touch down the procedure is difficult and is carried out usually during training flights.

This is because the plane’s auto brakes and speed brakes get deployed immediately. To quote a senior commander - “It is not recommended to do a go around if the plane’s deceleration procedures have been initiated’’.

So, if the AI plane had already overshot the Landing zone and 25% of the runway was lost and the very fact that the airport has a short landing strip - the "go around" should not have been tried at all - because when landing the pilots may have also tried to slow down the engines - thus reducing chances of a take off again, but unfortunately a re take off was tried and now the tower or light pole hit the wing further sealing the destiny.

There is another important question - were the tyres and braking systems checked while leaving Dubai? It seems the tyres and breaking systems of Air India are always faulty and Delhi and Mumbai always has a lot of "emergency landings" especially for Air India flights.
      God bless families.

      This message is to Daijiworld

So many people have expressed their opinion on the tragic Air crash and have offered their suggestions to make the Airport safe. Please forward these messages to the concerned authorities in India. Pointless if these valuable suggestions do no reach the authorities.

Personally, I always felt that the Bajpe Airport Runway was risky - not long enough and not enough level ground on either side of the runway. Seems this accident has highlighted the risk. Moreover, there was an accident some years back, a plane had overshot the runway and fell in a ditch. The authorities should have taken that incident into consideration while making the new runway.

I deeply regret this tragedy and the loss of so many lives, including the Pilots and Air Hostesses. I offer my heartfelt sympathies to their families. May God give them the strength to bear the loss.

The Instrument Landing System was damaged during the overrun. Yet, the airport was kept open for commercial flights, using only the non-precision approach facilities, even after sunset. A non-precision approach is one where there is no electronic glide path to guide the pilot down a predetermined angle for landing. Was that a commercial decision or a safety decision? Safety studies have established that more than 74% of approach and landing accidents have happened during non-precision approaches and in night conditions. Mangalore has just witnessed a fatal crash. Was it wise then to open the airport without the ILS and allow non-precision approaches? The recent Air Afriqiyah Airbus 330 crash and the Polish president's flight crash in Russia, were at the end of a non-precision approach. The Kingfisher Airlines accident in Mumbai in December 2009 was also from a non-precision approachOn August 2, 2005, an Air France Airbus 340 flight overshot the Toronto runway and went down the ravine. The terrain was similar to the Mangalore airport overrun area. The difference - all 307 survived the post-crash fire and were rescued. The 158 passengers in mlore were not so lucky with the rescue effort at Mlore.is our airport capable of quick emergency response and rescue efforts? Areas surrounding the airport built up and there is no clear passage for crash tenders to access an aircraft in case of an accident during approach or during a take-off.wake up!!!

We cannot blame anyone as these accidents happen in seconds time and there is very less time to react. I sure the pilots might have given their best of the experience to control the mishap. In any case the airport requires wider runway to control future tragedies. If the runway was wide enough, the plane could have come to hault without any mishap and would not have plunged into the valley causing so many deaths. The accident is very unfortunate.

I am a frequent flyer to managalore and most of the time noticed that passengers are not obeying to the rules of switiching of their moible at the time landing. The moment captain s the landing, everyone switch on their mobile and start to talk.

This will create lot of problems on the aircraft instruments, since foreign sim cards start searching for signal with high range. We cannot blame everything on pilots and aircraft. As a responsible passenger will have to obey the rules while in air. Whatever happened is happened. We cannot challenge GOD's wish. Its mere a mishap which could have been avoided. I feel, the pilot landed his plane beyond the allowed threshold by 2000 feet and overshot the runway, in the process he tried to take off again by giving power to the engine which is evident from the flight throttle. Had the runway had the extra length for overshooting, this tragedy could have been avoided. I also feel the pilot landed the aircraft at a speed above the required level, as a result of speedy touch down the tyres got blasted and the plane broke down in two parts, which led to system failure as it is evident from the statement of the survivors. Human error cause most of the accidents.

Will the administration now work in all seriousness to provide Mangalore a real international class airport which will meet all safety norms?
Private/government partnership can bring about this and let the existing airport be used for small domestic, charter and cargo purposes.
It is tragic so many innocents had to loose their lives.May their souls rest in peace and their families have the strength to cope.

This shocking Tragic incident has taken so many lives, there could be many people to blame, it's not just Air India Pilot error, there is International Airport Authorities who have approved the project in the first place.

How can an international flight land on a short run-way. This project should have been called for international bidders who may have a different plan to provide longer runways required for International flights. Blame must also go to Karnataka govt. for they approved the project. This was to happen one day or other. Can they wake up now. For some reason when runway becomes short where do they go, how do they escape, these are questions that should have answered prior to plans being approved. Simple commonsense. Inefficiency on the part of these people cost  so many lives.

My heart bleeds for those poor souls, my close friends brother is one of the survivors, however his cousin perished with his lovely family. I do realise that we cannot blame any one for this mishap, however I wish to comment I feel angry about Air India,I travelled Air India thrice over the years I lived in kuwait and Dubai, and every time both ways I had meserable experiences with the flight , cancelled or delayed, the last time was on August 15th 2007 my last exit out of the UAE , flight was delayed for 18 hours due to technical diffculties, the official in Dubai cared less for our plight moreover they were rude inspite of me being polite, I was not allowed to leave the airport as I had my visa cancelled hence was not put up in the hotel.
I hope the tragic loss of these poor souls remind these incompetent AI officials to serve their customers better in future. As for me I made it a point that I will never fly AI.

Ministry of civil Aviation must clarify two Issues. 1. Why They are recruiting Foreign Pilotes?East European Pilotes are highly skilled but they have huge communication problem. So Recruit Indian Piolets.
2)Stop allowing flights to operate this table top runway Airport. Make immediate arrangements to construct a new airport to substitute this one.
Make sure that a complete transperancy in all investigations and report to people because these issues are not politicians private matters. The public has the right to know the reasons and suggestions to overcome this Issue.

This crash has brought a lot of media to the hospital like WENLOCK where the actual condition of the hospital is poor / neglected. We hope that now with the media presence more measures will be taken to improve this hospital.

We will be travelling shortly to Mlore by airindia express. Many have advised us to cancel our tickets. But cancellation will involve a lot of cancellation charges for my fly and to reissue all tickets is expensive. But is cancellation an option?
This can happen to any flight landing in Bajpe.
The authorities have to come up with ways to improve upon the existing facilities.
No body is perfect. The pilot did make a mistake as per many reports. But then there should be an allowance on the landing strip for a mistake. On this strip there is no allowance. The only allowance is death. This should not be the case.

Further it should be noted that there is not even a hospital near to the airport. This is something that needs to be looked into. Thank God there were fire engines there!

We hope with all the media presence in the area the media does a wonderful job of bringing to light these loopholes and the authorities rectify these loopholes at the earliest thus avoiding further deaths to innocent lives.
Our prayers go out to the loved ones to bear this terrible grief.

Its devastating scene. From morning 6 till in the late night we were watching. One or the other person may be felt while the plane is landing in Manglore. Just left of your side that deep pit will scare you if the plane move slight over the range what will happen? Since the runway is short by 1000 Mts how the aviation minister permitted to fly in the newly created runway. We have better place near by otherthan this hilly scarry area why can't they create a safe and sound one instead of killing the poor passengers.

If the runway is longer sure this tragedy wouldnot have happend. However the pilot also included in his adventure while landing the flight. Many faces are known to us. Now it gives a scare to land in Manglore airport. Hope the government will take action immediately. May the soul rest in peace and for the berrived families let god give them strength to bare the loss.

Life is a blink of an eye. When the eye lids open and close, within those seconds there is no life. The incident which occurred in Mangalore is one of the terrifying. Nobody had thought this act would take place. But it took place within seconds. The people inside had no time to think, whether to jump from the plane or not. Nothing had strike their mind. The dear-ones who were waiting for them, were remained there itself, but they did not arrive.

The people with all grief rushed to the spot to look at the location, but they remained silent. They could not believe through their eyes. There are many houses where there is mourning at this moment. This is the condolence message to all those family members who lost their dear-ones in the plane crash. May the Lord help them in their grief. And I want to salute to all the localities, which has helped tremendously in removing the deceased bodies and all the fire fighters, police staff, doctors and the ambulance drivers, who has helped to their extent.

If charred bodies could be unearthed does one think that Black box would be burnt or lost ??

AAI , politicians and media do not want to disclose that the black box is recovered as if they do , then it will not give them enough time to cover up the error.

Jaago India Jaago .... Fight for causes like these to get the truth to light....

Instead we fight for caste , religion and quota's on some party worker's / politicians conspiracy.

Fight for the truth...... The truth is out there ....

It's a sad day, unbearable loss of so many lives and sad news early in the morning. When they were about to reach home with joy, turned out to be unexpected end. Horrible pain to their dear ones and for all Mangloreans and keralites. May God show mercy on them all, forgive them and give eternal rest. I consider, the pilot is to blame for late landing or whatever decision he had taken, forgetting so many lives. Secondly, runway is not enough for such pilots.

Please ensure & mark the landing line and how much speed it takes and how much land is required. This is must in future landings, otherwise either pilots are not upto the mark or airport is not fit for landings. It is used as profitable ground by Karnataka Govt. Now full measures to be taken for the safety of all. There must be enough ground and space for runway, if pilots are not fit train them very well. May God give strength and courage to all bereaved families.

RELIABILITY does not happen by itself. It needs to be strictly implimented with decipline. Concept & implimentation of RELIABILITY had first taken birth in the AVIATION INDUSTRY & killed as well, by them, by ignoring one of even the simplest "set norms". This is not the time to Politically play-up by resignation & manifest withdrawal symptoms & acceptance etc, which is another mokery to RELIABILITY. Considering the present & the future density of traffic & 360degrees development in touch with the TIME expensive tho, AUTHORITIES MUST DECIDE INSTANTLY TO PROVIDE FOR E X T E N S I O N OF METALLIC RUNWAY apart from the rutine reactive measures such as Investigation,"Root Cause Analysis" & upgradation of ATC,Proactive Relability Maintenance etc. Nevertheless > DGCA, Airports Authorities & Aviation Industry should provid allowance for MAN ERROR, wich is beyond the nature's control. Look at the damage, disaster & the number of loss of lives. Unless one looses their OWN, the issue remains ONLY AS NEWS on paper & air. I had suggested the above measures much before, but was ignore by the administration as it was expensive. Now who has paid for it ? Instead of sending condolences for the next batch & potential withdrawal/ resignation, VIPs dashing to the spot, investigation,Root Cause Analysis, talks of hitech upgradation, media coverage, loss of lives etc ADMINISTRATION should address & redress the the issue, "not reactively", but pro-actively to uphold RELIABILITY. 22nd May is a Black Saturday not only for Manglore but to all Indians..This was such a tragic news that cut through ones heart.

No one can be blamed. Cause this is an Accident.
Media ,AAI and politicians , please do not blame to Pilots as without the clearence from the ATC ( Air traffic control ) , No pilot would attempt to land an Aircraft as its not like driving a car and stopping whenever one wants to .
It would be a continious 2 way communication between the pilots and the ATC and on clearence from ATC and depending on the weather conditions , landing is attempted.

Lets not blame anyone and lets continue to pray that the family of the victims be consoled.

And a special note to all the people in India....

"Life is uncertain" . No matter to which caste , religion or nationality one is ...
Kindly remember tragerdy can strike anyone , anytime.May it be Hindu , Muslim , Christian or Sikh.

Try to remind yourselves that a few years are all what we have on Planet Earth ......
So please try to live life to the fullest with peace and harmony.

You at Daijiworld please start an email campaign-
      1. Can India which claims its at the brink of being a super power witness an accident of this nature
without any rescue operations from Airport/Govt.authorities and saving lives?
      2. Can India accept an (international?) airport which
has not passed the standards but risks the lives of so
      many common citizens?
      3. Though we hear the plane was good, with the losses Air India is making, there are always corners
which may be cut at the cost of other lives. Will the truth be
released after hearing the black box? What problems took place with the plane and the experienced pilots?

Strangely, further down on your webpage the inauguration of the new runway, pictures show the
bigwigs and less than a week to the hour when tragedy strikes, we are willing to blame the pilot, the runway, etc. etc.

You are in a position to start this campaign since so many Mangalorean and Keralite families have been affected and we see a few lakhs of Rs. announced as
relief not being sure when it will reach. Bulk of them who died were labourers. Who will compensate the loss of the life of the breadwinning family? If it is
given is it adequate for the survival of the family and
its dreams which were made when petrodollars started coming in?

While we mourn the death of all passengers and the crew we must not forget the loss of the lives of two experienced pilots.

May their souls rest in peace.

It was indeed a shocking and grief filled 22.05.2010, for the the entire Nation.
Technology has been advanced beyond our imagination, but still we cant defer death.every thing has been automated, Robotics, artificial inteligence, etc. etc.. but still we cant avert accidents and save precious lives. That is the sadest part.
Some may blame the system failure, some may blame the human error, some may blame the infrastructural faultiness, even some may blame the God, but the Blame Game will not bring back the precious lives lost.
God grant these souls ever lasting Peace and give strength to the bereaved families and relatives to over come this grief.

Shahnawaz, mangalore, I’ve always appreciated your comments. Just want to say that we are not sure whether the Air India Express, Boeing 737 landed at the old runway, about 1.6 km in length, or the new 2.6 km runway that became operational in 2006. Let’s wait for the result of the enquiry . Let the authorities do their findings & we will certainly know what went wrong. We may use that analysis to avoid future catastrophe. Accidents do happen, although we don’t want them to happen. At the moment let’s pray for those families who lost their loved ones & be there for them.

While all tragedies are painful this close to home tragedy indeed even more painful to watch and hear.
I pray for those who made, those did not and those who mourn. While home coming is a joyous one, those who come to receive them even more happiness to see them after along time coming home in toiling in another country to make a living to feed the families.

It is hard for me to accept tragedy at Bajpe a place close to me and the airport is a family home airport travelled many times.

Its the most scenic airport in the world and trust me it never occurred to be it could also subject to tragedies.

No blame for anyone except to say perhaps its the destiny because after so many years in operation this perhaps is the only and deadly accident. The authorities must take a signal in improving our city. THe present state of affairs from roads to sanitation to construction is appaling to say the least. Manglore is beautiful city and I am doubtful the present day developments would take away the serinity.
Let us pray for those who perished and those who mourn.

Not sure how far this is true but the question always remains as to the maintenance of these aircrafts by Air India.

Firstly My Condolences to the families of the deceased in the worst plane crash of the Decade Which claimed close to 160 lives.

Who's to be blamed for this tragedy?

As of now the blame has been Gyrating between the Pilots and the Runway of the Mangalore International Airport. It will go on till the probe is Finished..But we all know that once the Probe is out the blame will be just on the Pilots of the Aircraft IX 812.They may be at fault but it would not be right to just put the blame on them as Mangalore Runway too has many Defects.Mangalore Runway is a Table Top.In Table Top runways the length has to be more than what Mangalore runway has.

This Runway has just been inaugrated 10 days back and is Lengthier than the Old Runway. The Old Runway was supposedly one of the most Dangerous airports to land in the World but we have all been flying from ages in the old Runway Without knowing its risks Probably. Its high time the Civil Aviation Dept and State Govt Act on this and take corrective steps than put the Blame on others and wash off their hands.

The Pilots were highly Experienced and had 10200 hours and 3500 hours respectively of Flying Experience,so it would not be right to blame them completely as that would be a Shame to their family to Deal with all their Life.

People who Followed their Instinct and decided to unfasten seat belts and jump out managed to Survive although The Flights safety measures say Please Keep Your Seat Belts Fastened and Wait For Instructions. Its just that they were Destine To Live. There were 8 Survivors

There's a very famous saying There's many a Slip Twixt the Cup and Lip..In Table Top Runways the slip between the Cup and Lip is DEATHS OF HUNDREDS.

I think it’s the worst disaster Mangalore had ever witnessed. It was not very long ago that Mangalore was added to the map of international flights and the airport was developed in order to cater the increasing number of passengers. Most of the travelers must be the breadwinners of their families who were quite happy to board the plane that was touching their hometown. I can imagine the feelings and excitement when one is returning home, not to mention the excitement of family members who are foreseeing the arrival of their family member who went abroad to uplift their family. No one had expected this type of horrible accident. However, the fate was destined differently against the wishes of all of us.

While I congratulate those passengers who cheated the death, I pray to the Almighty to give courage to the bereaved families to sustain their irreparable loss.

Hope our Political leaders,AAI will upgrade the runway and make it safe for future landings which may give us courage to travel thru 'AIR INDIA EXPRESS', as traveling thru IXE has never been smooth. It will also help other Airlines to start their svcs to Bajpe which will be 'RAHAT KA SAAS'.Hope travellers will agree.

      3. Not even a single rescue helicopter was seen at the sight with trained commandos entering into the burning flight to save even a single precious life We could see the successful attempt of putting out the fire after the full burning process and then removing the charcoal bodies from the site with the help of the civilians and then transporting and flooring them in the Government Hospital.

We are not here to blame the authorities nor the government on their role but simply need to admit that we are not at all equipped to face any small nor such major mishaps. Aren’t we comparatively very much behind when it comes to saving human life just compare it with many others nations? Pray that Central and State Government reflects on this reality which is a major drawback and gives a serious taught on such important issues in their agenda.

Devastating tragedy causes an unbearable loss to the grieving families. Let us not simply join to say that all was right but its only fate that went wrong for so many families including the Cabin Crew.
      We need to admit that:
      1. Mangalore is not an airport that meets perfect International Airport Standards having Quality Safety Measures. The accident being in the vicinity of the airport the rescue operation witnessed today involved more of civilians’ wholehearted service activity in giving their best possible in shifting the injured and the burnt than, the technically trained and qualified officials playing their life saving job roles. There was no trace of any sophisticated life saving rescue operation from any of the concerned authorities raising a question whether such authority exists. We have seen some good efforts from fire service officials trying to put off the burning fire and smoke using water and chemicals than practically involving in rescuing the people from inside the burning flight.
      2. Ambulances though queued to shift the injured and burnt to the hospitals, no temporary medical emergency treatment tents were erected in the vicinity of the accident sport with the presence of medically equipped doctors to attend to the injured.

This is an unimaginable tragedy, being felt across the world by people of Mangalore origin. Our heartfelt condolences to the grieving families. There is no comfort one can provide, except pray for God's mercy on all those victims and their families.

We must understand something from this tragedy: We are from Bajpe and well aware of the terrain location. India is running faster with technology, but crawling at snail pace with safety and environment. Here the safety was compromised when they built the runway. First the runway is at a slope, second, there is very short runway spill area at the far end near the east side, and on the west side, there is NO spill area at all. Thus planes land from west to east planes must land precisely at the beginning of the runway, otherwise the plane would fall short of the runway to break the speed.

A plane that lands half-way on the runway cannot make it because the runway is short (this is what happened with AI flight). A plane landing from west to east on a downward slope has more momentum to stop, than the east to west landing. East to west landing option should be explored since uphill landing would require less breaking power to break the speed, and any obstructions in the landing and take-off paths must be removed. Bajpe runaway is the most difficult runway, like the one in Brazil. These short runways are not meant for big planes. Indian govt must institute highest training requirements for operators (pilots) before they are allowed to land at Bajpe airport.

This tragic event is going to slow down the expansion of Bajpe airport.

Sad to hear.sincere condolences to all the victims. May god rest them in peace and give courage to all the family members who have lost their dear and near ones.But..but. and but are We all not responsible for this?.Knowing the critical terrain an International Airport is built and also certified? Is this all the knowledge and experties we have? Or Is it for the benefit and convenience of few? and as per the wish and will of few politicians and high influencials? And some common man has to shed his life?

I agree that this is not the time to talk all this. But atleast let us take some courage to oppose this kind of projects which will kill and put our own people in trouble.Let us ask our govrnment to take corrective steps, even if it comes to shifting it to a safer destination. It is a black day in our mangalorians history and let it not repeat for our future generation. My prayers for all who have lost their beloved ones that the almighty may give them strength to face the crisis.

It’s very sad news and a black day for all of us. Heart felt condolences and May Almighty God bless the souls of the deceased, give courage & strength to the family of the bereaving & speedy recovery for the survived ones.

Certainly it’s very scary while landing in Mangalore Airport. We have experience in our every visit and everyone knows about this problem but not much done. A fancy name is kept to the Airport/runway “TABLE TOP” Why not just a runway like other’s?

Instead of investing on the luxury terminal the money would have been used to lengthen the Runway. Today morning in the news (CNN IBN) Mr. Krishnan, Aviation expert commented that the request to add 500 sq ft was declined by the authority as it required additional 70 crores and thereby restricted to 8500 sq ft in 2005. Not to blame anyone but additional 500 sq ft would have made the difference. But its GOD FATE at least this tragedy should be an eye opener and GOVERNMENT should take the initiative to change so called scary “TABLE TOP” to normal RUNWAY.

Even if the Bajpe Airport is operating for several years environament is not sutiable for intgernational airport. This is wrong ion of the place by the authorities for up gradiation of Mangalore Airport to International airport. There is a lot of plain area in coastal districts for construction of international airport but the selfishness of the certain leaders and people they prefered the same airport instead of ing better place for international airport. We do not want furher people to die and all international flights completely stopped for Mangalore Airport permanenatly.

      Sat, May 22 2010

RADIO SPICE 105.4 FM Dubai and our entire team deeply mourn the loss of so many lives of passengers and the crew members of ill- fated Air India express flight IX-812 travelling from Dubai to Mangalore.

It’s a very sad, shocking day for all of us and most unfortunate incident.

We are struck with grief and our hearts bleed for those who have lost their dear and near ones. Our hearts are filled with sorrow and we do not find words to express our grief.

Our heartfelt sympathies to all those families & friends who have lost their loved ones in this unfortunate incident.

May the souls of those killed rest in peace. We prey to the Almighty GOD to give strength and courage to the families and friends of those who lost their lives in this unfortunate incident, to bear the un-repairable loss.

We also prey to the Almighty God for the few survivors and injured a very speedy recovery and return to their normal living.

Our humble request to all, is to kindly prey for the departed souls and sympathize with their families, instead of blaming everyone in the world and becoming overnight experts in aviation. Ifs, buts’ and blame game would add more hurt and grief to the families. Most definitely all can join collectively to demand corrective measures with the concerned authorities once this most difficult period for the families is over.

Instead of venting our anger & sending condolences at this forum,we Muslims,Hindus & Christians should join hands and shouldn't allow AAI officials to land any aircraft until the Bajpe runway is extended further 1000ft to achieve international standards. This incident should be a lesson for people of mangalore that be it BJP at state or Congress at centre doesn't cares for the people.Wake up Mangaloreans and live the true Mangalorean culture of brotherhood.

HEART BREAKING NEWS. I am sad, agnry, speechless and helpless.I think,if Indian pilot was there, this major tragedy would have been avoided. Chief Pilot was not from India. Our planes are bad but our Pilots are brave and great.  I don't think any air crash took place in the world because of Indian pilot's mistake. Anyway, this is not the time to argue. Let God give victims families strength to bear this tragedy. Excellent work by police, fire fighters and locals. Thanks Daiji.

      Our life is with God.
Early morning each and everybody eager to meet there relatives or happily landing to their motherland God has called he or she through Air crash before half an hour. I think everybody enjoying in his or her heart and mind that time only God has called him or her. No body knew but God only knows. Everything is happen as per his plan and vision. God knows everything about our life since we come on this earth with empty hand. God is trying to make us close with him but I think we are not ready to go with him. When death or difficulties comes we all crying and remembering God after wards we are forgetting everything.

“God is one” and we all are Children of God in the planet earth.

Our Lord Jesus Christ said, “forgive them Father”- they don’t know what they are doing.
After struggling on the cross – he said it is finish and bow his head and die.

Today each and everybody is enjoying their journey Dubai to their motherland but God discontinues their journey and taken them to his garden.

May his or her soul rest in peace Amen.
We will pray to our Lord give them rest and peace in his garden.

It is very sad news for all. A thorough probe must be ordered to find the reason behind the crash and corrective action must be taken. If the visibility was very poor why did the ATC allow the plane to land in the first place? May the departed soul rest in peace.

A very sad news hit us at dawn today. Unbelievable incident that took place in Mangalore. I can't express my grief. Just two days back I travelled from M'lore to Muscat. It is very hard not to feel for the one in the flight as he/she met death as soon as they landed in the hometown. I pray to God to give the strength to all the bereaved families to bear teh loss of their dear ones. May all the departed souls rest in peace.

What should we tell and whom we should blame? It is really a very sad incident - that too soon after the Airport opened as an International Airport!!
(I think the old one though had its own deficiencies still functioned efficiently. They may tell poor visibility and such excuses, but still we had much worse weather situations, and never had any problems of such nature.)
