Bantwal: Police arrest woman having history of stealing from women, children at weddings

Bantwal, Dec 11: Bantwal town police personnel have arrested a woman who is accused of stealing jewellery from the necks of the children and ornaments from women's handbags at wedding functions.

The woman has been identified as Fatima Sahinaz, wife of Mudipu resident Siddiq. The robberies were captured on CCTV which were present in the wedding halls. The owners of the wedding halls lodged complaints in Bantwal town police station and Bantwal rural police station in this connection.

She was exposed while trying to snatch a chain from the neck of a child at S S Auditorium hall, Panemangalore on Thursday, December 10. As per reports, Fatima steals ornaments in places where women gather in groups and is reportedly an expert in snatching jewellery the necks of children. She often carried out her crime was the guests go to the washroom to wash their hands after food.

On Thursday, when a child at the wedding hall was washing hands, Fatima tried to steal a chain. Following which, the kid began drawing attention by crying loudly. The attempted theft came to light when the guests began enquiring on the reasons for the child crying. Bantwal town police personnel, who were alerted regarding the matter arrive at the spot and arrested Fatima.

A complaint of the theft of a chain weighing 14 gms during a wedding programme at S S Auditorium on November 29 was registered in Bantwal town police station.

On interrogating her, Fatima confessed to stealing jewellery for the last 10 years and also admitted to committing robberies at S S Mahal wedding hall three times before.

She also confessed to stealing ornaments at Yashaswi hall, Farangipete, Thokottu Unity hall, Khazana in Talapady and several other places. Police have recovered gold ornaments weighing 234 grams from her possession. Fatima also reportedly sold the ornaments at jewellery shops and got the rest melted which she stated that she has kept it in the bank.

Police have produced Fatima in court and she has been remanded to judicial custody.

Bantwal town SI Avinash registered a case in this connection under guidance from DySP Valentine D’Souza and circle inspector T D Nagaraj on the directions from SP Laxmiprasad. Crime division SI Kalaimar has taken up the investigation in this matter. Crime division staff also took part in the operation.
