Mangaluru: Muslim priest assaulted with hammer for campaigning in favour of BJP candidates

Mangaluru, Dec 12: A gang assaulted a Muslim priest with a hammer and attempted to kill him for campaigning for BJP candidates in gram panchayat elections.

The incident took place on Saturday December 12 under Konaje police station limits.

Asaigoli resident Hanif Nizami (40) is the victim of the deadly assault. It is alleged that Asaigoli resident, Congress activist Karim led gang involved in the act. Hanif Nizami has been campaigning in favour of BJP candidates in Uppala, Manjeshwar, Paivalike and Manjanady. The pictures in this connection had gone viral on social media.

“Congress candidates were getting elected unopposed in Manjanady gram panchayat limits where my house is situated in the past. But four BJP candidates are in the fray this time. Nizami has participated in campaign in their favour. Congress activists have attempted to kill Nizami out of anger,” alleged BJP minority unit leader Fazul Asaigoli.

It is gathered, Hanif Nizami had held a meeting of religious priests under the banner of BJP minority unit a few years ago. He had assured in the meeting that he will provide government facilities. The Muslim leaders who were anguished by it had expelled him from his job in Adkarepadu madarasa. Nizami is functioning as religious priest in Puttur areas
