Bengaluru, Dec 15: The state government is expected to announce the opening of schools which have remained closed for nearly nine months on account of corona scare. The department of public instruction is seriously considering a proposal to scrap summer holidays altogether this time to make up for the lost time.

The academic year this time is likely to begin in January and by July the teachers have to finish teaching most of the syllabus. An official said that the government is seized of the matter and it will announce its decision on this issue soon.

No classes have been held this year because of the pandemic and the ambitious 'Vidyagama' scheme of taking education to the doorsteps of the students was withdrawn on account of some problems which cropped up in between. Even though the proposal to take up 'Vidyagama' again is under consideration, a final decision has not been taken so far.

The officials say that the curriculum for the year has to be handled during the truncated period of this academic year and therefore, taking away or pruning down the summer holidays is a measure that is very much needed.

President of Primary School' Teachers Association, V M Narayanaswamy, opines that the teachers have the responsibility of handling classes by making some adjustments as the classes should be handled by taking into account age of the children, their intellectual and mental capacity etc. He said that the holiday of at least 15 to 20 days would be desirable in the light of unique circumstances facing the teachers and the students this time. He, however, said that the teachers will cooperate with whatever decision the government takes.
