Mangaluru: With lesser coronavirus cases, demand for oxygen plummets

Mangaluru, Dec 17: The demand for oxygen which had soared when coronavirus cases were on the rise, has now eased and the demand level has come down to pre-coronavirus level. Currently, four to five tonnes of oxygen is being supplied and the same is found to be sufficient to meet the current demand.

When 300 to 400 corona patients were getting admitted into hospitals every day between July and October this year, many were suffering from lung-related ailments. As breathing problems were prominent, putting the patients on oxygen felt very much necessary. The demand for oxygen per day had reached over 15 tonnes every day including eight medical colleges and the Wenlock government hospital. Steps were taken to stop the supply of oxygen from oxygen supply units for commercial purposes, and the entire production was directed to hospitals. Oxygen was also being brought from Ballari, Kerala and Bengaluru.

Now the demand, as well as supply, match each other at four to five tonnes per day, which was the standard level prior to the onset of coronavirus.
