Kundapur, Jun 1: In connection with the incident in which a policeman of Byndoor police station was killed in the town by a member of a gang of robbers on Monday morning, additional details have come in.
The attackers have been identified as Rajesh Nair (37) and Raghu Nambiar (38) from Mattanoor in Kannur district, Kerala. At around 2.30 am on Monday, the two had approached G S Nayak Petrol Bunk near Parijata Circle in the city and woken up Santosh (30), cleaner of a private bus, who was sleeping there. They demanded money from him. When he said he did not have money, they stabbed him with a knife and assaulted Ravi (30), who was sleeping by the side. Santosh, who sustained grave injuries, is recuperating in Vinaya Hospital here.
They next raised a din in Kharvikery and Rama Mandir Road. When the policemen arrived on the basis of information passed on to them by Ravi, the gang was trying to break open Hema Jewllery, a fair price shop, and Nagashree Finance in Kharvikery area. When the policemen confronted them, they assaulted Kundapur sub-inspector, Subhash, with an iron rod. When circle inspector, Kantaraju, slipped during the operation, his pistol luckily got jammed. As such, even when Raghu picked it up and tried to fire, it did not go off. The rod and knife used by the killers have been recovered. The arrested men reportedly have confessed to having threatened the employees of a bunk in Byndoor two days back, and forcibly snatching away money from them.
Sridhar, a soft-spoken man, who earlier worked as the driver of the women’s police station here, was transferred to Byndoor police station on his request, four months ago. He had married two years ago, and is survived by a small child, and wife, Nagaratna, working in Kollur police station. His cremation was conducted on Monday evening at Byndoor with full state honours. Earlier, the body was kept in front of the police station, where people paid their last respects to this soft-spoken, popular policeman.
State home minister, Dr V S Acharya, said that Sridhar will be given bravery award posthumously in recognition of sincerety and bravery shown by him, and promised all help from the government to the family of the deceased.
