Mangalore, Jun 1: Eminent Social Worker Shalini Pandit and ex-deputy Mayor of Mangalore Judith Mascarenhas released 8 small Konkani books for children published under the first batch of “Vishwa Konkani Bala Sahitya Mala”, the childrens’ literature series initiated by Konkani Language and Cultural Foundation, Mangalore at World Konkani Centre here recently.
Vishwa Konkani Bala Sahitya Mala, the first of its kind in Konkani language is the brain child of Basti Vaman Shenoy. The series is being published in Konkani in both Devnagari and Kannada scripts and will have more than 100 titles under it. Eminent Konkani writers like Jayashri Shanabhag, Jayashri Shenoy, Suchitra Shenoy and Chandramati Rao have penned these initial 8 books on sages like Valmiki, Vyasa, Vishwamitra, Parashurama and also on the leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Ammembal Subbarao Pai, Panje Mangesh Rao and Shenoy Goembab.
The series has been published under the grant provided by Ramadas Kamath U., senior vice president, Infosys Technologies Ltd.
Inaugurators Pandit and Mascarenhas stressed on the need for Children’s literature in general and Konkani in particular and commended the efforts of the Foundation in this direction.
President of the foundation Basti Vaman Shenoy chaired the function and explained the activities of the Foundation. Chandramati Rao, one of the writers of these books was honoured with a shawl on this occasion.
Secretary of the Foundation Venkatesh N Baliga welcomed the guests and the gathering.
