Puttur, Dec 26: A young entrepreneur lost his life after being electrocuted when harvesting areca nuts. He had gone up an areca nut tree at Ajjikallu in Olamogru village near here and was reaping areca nuts with the help of an aluminium hook when accidentally the hook came in contact with the power lines above.
The tragic incident happened on Friday December 25. The deceased was Raveendra Poojary (37), son of Babu Poojary from Ajjikallu, who owned GRB Infotech Computer Hardware.
Raveendra had come to spend some time at his native place on account of Christmas holidays. He decided to reap areca nuts from the trees located around his house at Ajjikallu and scaled a tree, duly holding an aluminium hook. The tip of the hook he was holding came in contact with the high tension power cable passing above the tree. Poojary was thrown to the ground and died instantly.
Raveendra had married four years back, and has left behind a one-year-old daughter and wife. He had started his own business at Mangaluru last year. His wife is working as a teacher of a government school.
In the recent past, several deaths have occurred on account of using aluminium hooks in Puttur and surrounding areas. Unlike the bamboo poles used earlier, aluminium hooks are conductors of electricity and therefore such accidents are happening.
