Bengaluru: Government proposes to trash Kasturirangan report on Western Ghats

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Dec 29: The state government has decided to reject the report tabled by Dr K Kasturirangan committee on the issue of conservation of Western Ghats. This report had created grave concerns in the minds of the people living in Malnad region.

The government feels that this is an unscientific report and therefore plans to convey its decision to the central government in a couple of days. It also has decided to file an affidavit in the National Green Tribunal (NGT) through the central government in this regard. If the NGT passes a contradictory order, the government will question the same through an appeal in the Supreme Court. This important decision was taken at the meeting of the cabinet sub-committee that was presided over by forest minister Anand Singh, on Monday December 27.

Minister Anand Singh, gave these details at a press conference he addressed jointly with minister R Ashok, after the said meeting. They said that if this report is implemented in Toto, many problems will surface and therefore it has been decided to reject it.

They said that at present, environmentally sensitive area limit has been prescribed at ten km from the borders of the reserve forests. They pointed out that within this limit, several gram panchayats, town panchayats and municipalities have been located and the above restriction will impact development. Therefore, the meeting discussed recommending one km from the forest border to be considered as ecologically sensitive area, but this has not yet been finalised, Ashok stated. This decision has provided temporary reprieve to 1,533 villages located near the forest areas in the state. If this report was implemented, the people would have to be evicted from these villages

Legislators from Malnad region had warned of bloodshed if the report is implemented as it is and they had urged the government to understand the seriousness and get the survey done afresh. The state government had assured not to evict the people and that basic infrastructure facility would be provided there.

Present Government at Centre and State doesn't follow reports, regulations and want to implement projects without considering the negative effects of the environment and affects on public.

Most of MP'S and MLA'S are not qualified and professionals in respective fields. They are looking at political benefits at the COST OF ENVIRONMENT DAMAGE and selling trees to pocket money. ENVIRONMENT IS VERY IMPORTANT ASPECT OF LIFE SO MUST SAVE and damage must be assessed before execution of any project. Sad that our POLITICIANS are after politics without considering the effects on MAN KIND!!!

In Malnad area there have been multiple landslides & mountains caving in due to rampant deforestation & levelling of mountains so short term strategies just to appease the people affected will have deleterious effects in the future

mostly the chairmen of these Committees / panel are appointed due to political Godfathers/connections...

this man, after retirement from Isro, must have done some campaigning for a post... As chairman of this panel, he would have enjoyed full office comforts, with Secretary, staff, car with driver, Govt accommodation... not to speak of emoluments/perks...

total of waste of tax payer money when some totally ineligible person is appointed to head study of environmental conservation...

Government agencies are totally bankrupt! They don't have money for compensation, so they are manipulating in every possible way & at any cost to garner money!

BTW, The farmers strike is flaring up, but nobody is bothered to settle it; media is busy trying to divert public attention to useless issues, but how long can it go on!

Give these people flats in urban areas where they will have all amenities importantly good education and this localisation of talent pool will attract companies. That is how China changed from rural to urban and achived rapid development. Unfortunately this is not in the interest of politicians from panchayet to PM level both for political and corrupt money making. Say goodbye to environment.

The compensation for the 2018 floods hasn't yet come. Destroy more forests and we get more floods and landslides.

If somebody like kasturi rangan writes reports like this without visiting any places, any panchayaths, just by sitting inside A/C cabbin at New Delhi. That is the case. Write something which is realistic, practical etc etc. Tomorrow if somebody says, capital new Delhi is nearby yamuna river which ecologically sensitive and stop all developments... is that practical

If according to you, Kasturirangan is not the correct person to author this report, then we should accept the Madhav Gadgil report.
Despite all the floods, extreme heat, hills caving in we human beings refuse to see the reality for their selfish purposes. Sad reality.

@Sandy- please do not consider any expert report.
Local politicians give best reports and solutions.
Read the above news completely. Meeting discussed recommendation of 1km from border of reserved forests.
