Beltangady, Dec 29: Bangerakatta lake situated in Parenki village of the taluk is on the verge of extinction due to non-removal of silt.

Water from Bangerakatta lake used to be flown to Sheshanaga Devarakambala that takes place at Anantheshwara temple of Macchina village through canals nearly 30 years ago. As time passed, the canals have also got blocked. Due to the growth of bushes and weeds around the lake, it has lost its beauty. Silt can be seen on the surface of the lake itself.

If this lake is developed by removing the silt, its water can be used for agriculture, drinking purposes and rural industries. But the lake is not put to proper use due to the negligence of concerned officials and people representatives. Ankarakatta lake, one more source of water, which is near the Madanthyar market has also met the same fate.

A project at the cost of Rs 30 lac to develop the Bangerakatta lake was chalked out in 2009. However, it was not implemented. MLA Harish Poonja has shown interest in removing the silt and constructing retaining walls and to build a park also alongside the lake. He has also assured grants for the same.

Purushotham G, PDO of Madanthyar says, "Development of Bangerakatta and Ankarakatta lakes that fall under the limits of Madanthyar gram panchayat is a long standing demand. Both will be revived with the help of grants received through the MLA."
