Mangaluru, Dec 31: Out of the 3,222 seats of 220 gram panchayats of Dakshina Kannada district, for which the polling was held in two phases, BJP supported candidates have won 1,939 seats while the Congress supported candidates bagged 1,034 seats. SDPI won 132 seats, JD (S) supported candidates in six seats, CPI supported candidates won in five seats and 106 seats were won by independent candidates. In total, 7,275 candidates contested in the elections. Out of this, 91 candidates were elected unanimously.

Out of the 631 seats in 46 gram panchayats of Beltangady taluk, BJP supported candidates won in 481, Congress supported in 126, SDPI supported in 20 and four others. Seven candidates were elected unanimously even before the election was held. In the 2015 elections, BJP had won 331, Congress in 268 and others had won 29.

In Moodbidri taluk, out of the 401 seats in 12 gram panchayats, BJP supported candidates won in 248, Congress supported in 120, SDPI supported in 10, CPIM supported in one and 22 others. Seven candidates were elected unanimously in which there are five BJP supported candidates while two are from Congress supported. In total 419 candidates were in the fray.

In Mangaluru city north, out of the 251 seats under 13 gram panchayats, BJP supported candidates won in 251, Congress supported in 82, SDPI supported in 28, JD (S) supported in six and eight were won by others. In the 2015 elections, BJP supported candidates had won in 120 seats while Congress supported candidates bagged 123 seats and eight were won by others.

Out of the 332 seats of 19 gram panchayats of Mangaluru, BJP supported candidates won in 92, while Congress supported candidates were victorious in 188 seats, SDPI supported in 36 and 16 were won by others. In the 2015 elections, BJP supported candidates had won in 103 seats, while Congress supported candidates had bagged 209 and 20 seats were won by others.

In Bantwal taluk, out of the 570 seats of 39 gram panchayats, BJP supported candidates won 317, Congress supported in 215, SDPI supported in 25, JD (S) supported in four and nine others. 14 people got selected unanimously, out of which 11 are BJP supported and three are Congress supported. In total 1,925 candidates were in fray. In the 2015 elections BJP supported candidates had won 281, Congress supported had won in 274 and 15 were bagged by others.

In Puttur taluk, out of the 470 seats of 31 gram panchayats, BJP supported candidates won in 303 seats, while Congress supported were victorious in 148, SDPI supported won eight and 11 were won by others. 21 candidates were unanimously elected. All these are BJP supported candidates. In total 704 candidates were in fray. In the 2015 elections, BJP supported candidates had won 279, Congress had won in 187 and others bagged four seats.

For the 567 seats under 46 gram panchayats of Sullia-Kadaba taluk, BJP supported candidates won in 371, Congress supported in 155, SDPI supported in five and 36 were won by others. In 2015, BJP supported had won in 426 seats while Congress supported had won 141 seats.

Udupi

The vote counting of the gram panchayat elections came to an end. The electoral process was held with much decorum. The counting of the votes had begun on Wednesday, December 30 at 8 am in the morning in all the seven taluk headquarters. It came to a close late at 1.45 am on Thursday December 31 in Kaup.

In Udupi, the elections were held for 16-gram panchayats, where BJP-backed candidates secured a huge majority. The BJP-supported candidates were victorious across 11-gram panchayats of Udupi taluk. Whereas Congress-backed members gained a majority in four gram panchayats. Polls were held for 322 seats of the 16-gram panchayats of Udupi taluk. 187 BJP-backed candidates have won the elections. On the contrary, 119 Congress-backed candidates have secured a win at the elections. Five members from the Welfare Party of India and one SDPI-backed candidate have also won at the gram panchayat polls. Over 11 independent candidates have made their way to gram panchayat.

About nine gram panchayats went to poll in Hebri taluk. In which BJP-backed candidates got a majority in six gram panchayats, while Congress-backed candidates won a seat in one gram panchayat. On the other hand, independent candidates secured a victory in two gram panchayats. Polling was held for 115 seats. Over seven members were elected unanimously. In Mudradi and Nadpalu BJP-backed candidates won in all the 15 and seven seats of gram panchayat respectively. Over 82 BJP-backed members have won in Hebri taluk, 11 Congress-backed candidates and 31 independent candidates have made it to gram panchayat.   

The election was conducted in 27 gram panchayats for 412 members for a total of 153 seats in Brahmavar taluk. 12 candidates were selected unanimously. BJP succeeded to get a majority in many panchayats (no one put the nominations for the 12 seats). According to the Brahmavar Constituency (including some parts of Udupi) winning list, 217 seats were bagged by BJP-supported candidates, 102 seats by Congress and eight seats by independent candidates. Congress won a clear majority in many gram panchayats of Brahmavar namely Harady, Karje, Thonse-Kemmannu and Kadekar grama panchayats.

The gram panchayat election was held for 16 panchayats in Kaup taluk. BJP supported candidates won 18 seats out of total 36 seats in Belle gram panchayats, Congress supported candidates won two seats. In some places, BJP supported candidates defeated its opposition in just two to three votes. According to the Kaup Assembly constitution calculation, BJP occupied 274 seats out of total 500 seats. Out of which, 197 candidates were backed by Congress. 21 independent candidates and eight SDPI supported candidates have also secured victory. Perdur, Manipur, Alevoor, Katpady, Shirva, Kurkalu were won by Congress with a clear majority. Belapu was unanimously taken over by the Rural Development committee led by Belapu Deviprasad Shetty.    

The polling was held for the 530 seats of 43 gram panchayats in Kundapur taluk. Though the total number of seats is 554 and as only 24 candidates were elected unanimously, polling was held for only 530 seats. According to Kundapur Assembly winners list, the total seats are 480, out of this, BJP-supported candidates won 307 seats, whereas Congress-supported candidates secured victory over 147 seats. Meanwhile, 26 were independent candidates. Congress supported candidates were able to occupy seats in Avarse, Pandeshwar, Thekkatte, Beluru, Hardalli-Mandalli, Malahalli, Madamakki, Koni and Kalawara.

In the 259 gram panchayat seats of Byndoor taluk, seven candidates have been elected unanimously. Gram panchayat elections were held for 552 seats in Byndoor Assembly Constituency. BJP-supported candidates won in 325 seats, Congress-supported won 201. Meanwhile, 19 independent candidates and eight SDPI candidates secured seats in Byndoor, those are four each in Shiroor and Kavrady gram panchayats. Meanwhile, Congress-supported candidates got a clear majority in Shiroor and defeated BJP-supported candidates with two or three votes. 

There are a total 27 gram panchayats in Karkala taluk and election was held for 399 seats. Over 796 candidates contested in the election. According to the assembly list, the total seats are 492, out of this BJP supported candidates occupied 362 seats and Congress supported candidates won 102 and 28 were won by others. The election was held in all 187 polling booths and about 197,825 votes were cast.
