Two persons, Shyam and Nihal, from the Mantra Surfing team nearby were passing by when they saw that these people were drowning. They jumped into the river and saved the lives of four while the other, Jayaram Gowda, lost his life.

The group, after lunch, had approached the estuary of river Shambhavi. They thought that the water level there was low but were taken aback on finding that the water level rose all of a sudden. Mulky police inspector Kusumadhar visited the spot and registered a case.

The deceased Jayaram Gowda (49) was a BJP leader from Kadaba and resident of Pijakala Arshila there. He is survived by wife, a son, and a daughter. Gowda had accompanied his son who is in sixth standard, during the said picnic, it is said.
