Mangaluru, Jan 4: N Shashi Kumar, who has newly taken over charge of the city commissionerate, has undertaken an initiative against those who are found to be loitering around the city streets at night, creating trouble for the citizens by consuming drugs, liquor etc.

Within two days of his assuming charge of the commissionerate, the policemen undertook an operation within the limits of Barke and Pandeshwar police stations here. Over a hundred drunk people, people moving about under suspicious circumstances and those found holed up in dark corners, were rounded up. They were taken into custody, their names and addresses were taken down, and their photos were taken. They were warned and sent with their close ones, who were contacted and asked to pick the youngsters, and released by issuing a warning that if they get caught again, they will be arrested and booked under legal provisions.

He asked them to desist from sitting aimlessly in open grounds, sitting in vehicles at parks, bus stand etc, not to consume liquor and drugs or move about without purpose during late night hours etc. He asked them to reach home immediately after their work is finished.

"We had received several complaints from the people. People said that drunk people sitting near the temples, railway tracks, bar etc crate trouble for them. We were also told about people sitting together and ridiculing or passing comments about others. With the support of deputy commissioners of police, Hariram Shankar (law and order) and Vinay Gaonkar (crime), we have undertaken this operation within the jurisdiction of tow police stations. Henceforth, this operation will be undertaken regularly in all the station limits. We have identified hotspots where the drugs are consumed," the commissioner told the media. He also requested the parents to make sure that youngsters and students do not fall prey to such rackets.
