Udupi, Jan 6: In order to support the farmers of the country in their fight against the agricultural laws, Udupi district women Congress committee and Kota Block women Congress committee held a unique event called 'Mahila Congress Nadige, Annadatara Balige' (March of women Congress towards those who provide food).
The programme was held on the paddy field of Sheena Naika and Shiva Naika of Shiroor village of Kota block. Dr Pushpa Amarnath, president of KPCC women committee was present. Addressing the gathering Amarnath said, "The Union government is all set to implement three agricultural laws, which are against the interest of the farmers. Thousands of farmers are protesting in Delhi against these draconian laws. Women Congress has planned events of this nature in every district of Karnataka in order to show solidarity with the agitation farmers of Delhi. Farmers, who strive to satiate our hunger, are the ones who provide food for us."
The members of the committee harvested the vegetables that were grown on the farms of both the farmers and showed their support. They also felicitated families of both farmers by offering them shawl, Dhoti, sarees, fruits and flowers. In addition, the members of the women Congress committee bought the vegetables and showed their solidarity with the farmers. They also had meals with the families of both the farmers.
At the beginning of the programme, a minute's silence was maintained to respect the souls of the farmers who have committed suicide due to various financial issues. Geetha Wagle, president of Udupi district women Congress gave the introductory speech. Two songs written and sung in praise of farmers by Kusuma Kamath were lauded by everyone.
Dr Pushpa Amarnath handed over the order letter for some of the new office bearers of the district women Congress executive committee. Mamatha Shetty, president of Kota block women Congress rendered the vote of thanks.
Shankar Kunder, president of Kota block Congress, Kishore Shetty, vice president, Y B Raghavendra, Suresh, Surekha Chandrahasa, incharge, district women Congress Udupi, Appi, former corporator of MCC, Veronica Cornelio, Dr Sunita Shetty, Roshini Oliver, Meenakshi Madhava Bannanje, Sarasu D Bangeran, Shanti Pereira, Jyoti Hebbar, Prabhavathi Salian, Agnes D'Sa, Prescilla D'Mello, Prabha Shetty, block president, Sandhya Shetty, Gopi K Naik, Zeba Selvan, Jayashree Shet, senior person Rajiv Shetty, Dinesh Bangera, Prasanna, Babu Naika and Krishnappa Shetty were present.
The programme ended with the National Anthem.
