Kasargod, Jun 9: In a shocking incident, a gang carrying sand illegally in a tempo, hit a police jeep that had stopped their vehicle. The incident occurred at Chattanchal near here, on Tuesday June 8.
Town police sub inspector, Babu Peringoth (36), constable, Y V Rameshan (36), and Sudhakaran (44), from the Home Guards, sustained serious injuries in the incident. They have been admitted into a hospital in the town. Balakrishnan, driver of the police jeep, escaped unhurt.
Peringoth and his team were taking an accused in an illegal liquor case from Chattanchal to the local police station. On the way, they saw a tempo carrying sand moving on the road, and signalled it to stop. The driver of the tempo ignored the signal. The policemen chased the tempo and succeeded in overtaking it and blocking its further movement at Padoor. But, as soon as the policemen got down, the tempo driver suddenly started his vehicle and hit their jeep.
Those in the tempo immediately abandoned the tempo and ran away. The policemen have registered a case and confiscated the vehicle and sand from the spot.
