Kasargod, Jan 7: A cruel act of strangling a newborn to death with an earphone cable has come to light in Badiadka police station limits here. Police have arrested the baby's mother in this connection.

The arrested woman has been identified as Shahina (24), wife of Chedekkal resident Shafi.

The incident took place on December 15, but came to light much later. It is learnt that the woman was brought to Kasargod hospital after she developed bleeding. The doctors who examined her said that the bleeding had occurred after she delivered several hours ago. The doctors asked her family to search the house for the newbown. Upon searching, an infant wrapped in a cloth was found dead under a cot in the house.

Police personnel took the baby's body to Kannur medical college hospital for post-mortem. The post-mortem report indicated that the child died due to strangulation by a cable. The mother on questioning confessed that she had killed the baby. Strangely, her husband and family members came to know of the delivery only in the hospital.

The police have summoned Shahina's husband Shafi and family members to the police station.

Sources said that Shahina had become pregnant within a few months after the delivery of her first child. Her husband and the family were not aware of her pregnancy. Shahina reportedly confessed that she killed the infant on December 15 soon after the birth of the child.

Shahina had not told anybody that she was pregnant. Her first child one year and three months old. She said that she kept her pregnancy a secret due to fear that she may be 'insulted' for becoming pregnant within a short span of time, said the police.

Shahina had hidden the dead baby under the cot with the intention of discarding the body elsewhere. However her act came to light due to her bleeding, the police said.

"She said that she kept her pregnancy a secret due to fear that she may be 'insulted' for becoming pregnant within a short span of time"

    And Quran says
“and do not “KILL” your children for fear of the “Poverty”. We provide for them and for you. Indeed their killing is ever “A GREAT SIN” (Quran 17.31)

You did a big sin just for "being insulted" !!!!

it is not enough to create some slogans and indulge in self-love and superiority complex and scorn for others... the ground reality has to be understood and efforts made to correct the situation...

I dont think the family was not aware of the pregnancy.. they believe god has given them another child... instead of planning after first child... they do not think what a women will undergo if she continuously conceives…. how much difficult it is to become pregnant... if she has become pregnant immediately after her first child.. its very less chance that the family or her husband did not come to know till the child birth.... her husband should be questioned who thinks women are child producing machines.... I have seen a live example where a women came to hospital with her mother to abort and this was kept secret from her husbands family.. as she already had 2 kids that to between 2 and 6... i dont understand what kind of thinking these men have and why dont they open their eyes...they think they will go to heaven by causing suffer to women....

Postpartum psychosis is a mood episode with psychotic features such as paranoid thoughts, auditory hallucinations, or disorganized thinking. It occurs in one to two mothers per 1,000 who give birth, according to the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Although not all women who kill their children suffer from mental illness, mothers who suffer from postpartum psychosis sometimes hurt themselves or their children during a psychotic episode.

“They have confused thinking,” says Susan Benjamin Feingold, a licensed clinical psychologist in Chicago who specializes in perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. “They often have delusions and hallucinations. We consider it a clinical emergency. They are at risk of hurting themselves or their children.”

Medical researchers estimate that untreated postpartum psychosis leads to an estimated 4 percent risk of infanticide, and a 5 percent risk of suicide.

“Suicide is a major contributor to maternal death in the first year postpartum. [And] postpartum psychosis increases the risk of suicide,” says Cara Angelotta, a psychiatrist at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, who treats women with postpartum psychosis.
Andrea Yates was a Texas mother with psychotic hallucinations of voices telling her that Satan wanted her to kill her five children. In 2001, she drowned her children in the bathtub and told a caseworker she believed she had saved them from the fires of hell. She also said she thought the mark of Satan, 666, was visible on her scalp and requested a razor so that she might shave her head.
Postpartum psychosis is associated with major-depressive disorder, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. Medical researchers estimate that 72 percent of women with postpartum psychosis are diagnosed with bipolar or schizoaffective disorder, and 12 percent have schizophrenia. But although some women, like Yates, endure depression for years before experiencing a psychotic

Rudolf: I applaud your efforts to inform and educate many readers about the nature of this psychological/psychiatric disorder. A very good friend of mine , a Prof of Psychiatry narrated to me that postpartum psychosis/ depression can occur in any society in any part of the globe. It is pretty common. It is necessary to provide immediate medical intervention with great deal of compassion.

I hope someday more people in India will become more aware of the existence of psychiatric illnesses in India.

A MOTHER KILLING HER OWN NEWBORN INFANT IS WELL KNOWN AS DUE TO A PSYCHIATRIC DISORDER, AFTER DELIVERY:

Maternal filicide is defined as child murder by the mother. Infanticide is child murder in the first year of life. The term neonaticide was coined by Resnick (9) to describe murder of an infant within the first 24 hours of life. Almost all neonaticides are committed by mothers. Neonaticidal mothers are often young, unmarried women with unwanted pregnancies who receive no prenatal care. For a detailed analysis of the neonaticide literature and a discussion of neonaticide prevention, the reader is referred to our recent review (10).

Resnick's review of the world psychiatric literature on maternal filicide (11) found filicidal mothers to have frequent depression, psychosis, prior mental health treatment, and suicidal thoughts. Maternal filicide perpetrators have five major motives: a) in an altruistic filicide, a mother kills her child out of love; she believes death to be in the child's best interest (for example, a suicidal mother may not wish to leave her motherless child to face an intolerable world; or a psychotic mother may believe that she is saving her child from a fate worse than death); b) in an acutely psychotic filicide, a psychotic or delirious mother kills her child without any comprehensible motive (for example, a mother may follow command hallucinations to kill); c) when fatal maltreatment filicide occurs, death is usually not the anticipated outcome; it results from cumulative child abuse, neglect, or Munchausen syndrome by proxy; d) in an unwanted child filicide, a mother thinks of her child as a hindrance; e) the most rare, spouse revenge filicide occurs when a mother kills her child specifically to emotionally harm that child's father.

1.Nobody knows that she was pregnant.
2.Nobody knew that she went under delivery pain to hospital

Can someone who is pregnant can hide her baby bump. And the changes in the body and moods.
Can someone come in 1 day back to home from hospital after delivery. Especially their ladies don't even have so much freedom to stay out without any permission.

She didn't go to hospital for delivery. She delivered herself and strangled the baby. She had to be taken to hospital when the bleeding didn't stop. It was discovered in the hospital that the bleeding was because of delivery.

She is mother to a child. She is married. And she became pregnant the second time. Why will the family insult her for becoming pregnant second time when it is considered halal to give birth at a rate mother nature will be challenged to the hilt.

It absolutely does not make sense. None of the data points connect here.

Just yesterday a lady killed her child and threw body in well. A mother's love is boundless. Family harassment and economic dependence plays a major role in these cases and are consistently overlooked.

I beat my children and sometimes very hard and then I immediately regret with tears in my eyes saying that they are angels. I massage them and hug them immediately. I strongly believe every child belongs to God more than their parents. God entrusts parents to take care of His children. Society needs education. This crime is heinous.

Do you think she became pregnant all by herself ? The person who took her as life partner has not time to talk to her so that she could confess what she want or doesn't ?

Cynthia Kirem ,I find it very strange when she says noone knew about her pregnency .Let other members ,but husband?how she could hide it from husband?Or baby not from husband?Thatswhy she killed it?However she got pregnent ,must be a premature? No wonder husband didnt knew she was pregnent.A very heinous act .Killing her own baby.If baby or foetus is still there let them make a DNA from baby and truth will come out.Anyway she should be punished for killing baby .Poor baby.May its soul find peace with angels. In muslim women one outsider may not make out pregnency belly ,because they wear mostly burkas.but at home they should have noticed.she must have initiated the abort or delivery without others notice.?Thatswhy noone knew.

Cynthia Kirem, why she was hidig her pregnency ,and baby killed ,?not even husband knew about it?is only one answer I can think. in her husbands absence ,she got pregnent ,from another person either by force or willing .Otherwise how come husband didnt know, and home people?second she must have induced delivery by other method ,in absence of home people and killed baby.unfortunately everything didnt go well .Since in such deliveries previous preparation like giving medicine or injection is necessary .to stop bleeding .Otherwise she wouldnt kill baby too.Now she is in risk.must admit what she did.so that she may get less punishment.but she will not get away .Poor innocent baby had to die.
