Mangaluru: One dead, another missing after group of 8 gets washed away at Munda beach

Mangaluru, Jan 10: In a tragic incident, one person drowned while another went missing after a group of eight got washed away at Munda beach near Sasihitlu here on Sunday January 10.

The deceased has been identified as Sunder (45). Another person identified as Damodar (55) has gone missing in the sea.

It is learnt that a group of eight including four men and four women had come from Thokur, Halengady to attend a baby shower. In the evening, they went to the beach.

Police sources said that though the local fishermen warned them against going into the sea, the group ignored the warning and descended into the water.

While playing in the water, all of them got washed away by the strong waves.

The locals rushed to their rescue and managed to bring six of them ashore. However, Sunder's life could not be saved.

Search is on to locate Damodar.

The condition of the rescued persons is said to be serious.

Suratkal police arrived at the spot and registered a case.

    Me and My Family went to this beach exact same timing that day. I am a localite, I myself never been to this beach specifically. We wanted to spend quality time, it was so depressing that 15 mins after we had arrived train of ambulances were entering the beach. We were not aware what was going on. We left the Place immediately.

    We must respect and worship the sea, not challenge it, these foolish tourists think they are expert Olympic Swimmers and get into the waters.

    People never learn lessons from the previous tragedies.
    It may be better to get a legislation to ban tourists and people without permit entering the sea. An attempted suicide case may be booked against those who violate this.

    Sad indeed. People tend to just ignore sincere advise either by local people or Fishermen who know the grave situation of the sea. Most of the times these tragedies take place when people ignore warnings from our Fishermen folks. My concern is that people do not bother to take precautions even after reading so many tragic incidents in the water. Why play with nature? It is as good as you play with your own lives & thus loose precious lives.
    It is very important that people listen to the advise of the Fishermen or any guards on duty.

    very tragic.One has to take the warnings of locals very serious.They know how sea is working its mood,.Water is a important element of this earth,and same time respect it and careful when one goes to sea.When not a good swimmer watch and remain far enjoy the fresh wind.Heartfelt sympathys to the family of deceased.Hope the rest will regain health fast.

    Government should invest money to build swimming pools in every town and cities to train the children’s it will helps to save there life and others life too.

    Very sad and tragic. RIP Sunder and hope that Damodar who is missing is found safe and sound. I wish a speedy recovery of the others who had gone swimming at Munda beach. These guys should have taken the warning from the fishermen which probably could have evaded this tragedy.

    Even if you know swimming, it's risky to get into the water because the seas are rough with strong currents sometimes. So, if you ever hear locals or fishermen asking you not to go into the water, please listen to them . They know exactly how the sea is.
