India breach Fortress Gabba, first to beat Aus at the venue in 32 years

Brisbane, Jan 19 (IANS): India on Tuesday became the first team to beat Australia at The Gabba in over 32 years when they defeated the hosts by three wickets in the fourth and final Test and clinched the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2-1.

Chasing 328, India achieved the target in 97 overs with Rishabh Pant remaining unbeaten on 89. Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara also scored 91 and 56 runs respectively.

West Indies were the last one to beat Australia at what is considered a fortress for the Australian team.

In all, Australia had won 40 out of the 62 games they played at the venue prior to this match, losing just eight.

Four of those losses have come against England while three came against West Indies, the last of which was in 1988. One came against New Zealand.

India have played seven matches, losing five, drawing one and winning the one in the ongoing series.

This is also the first time Australia have not won at The Gabba since 2012.

Back in November 2012, they had drawn against South Africa. Following that draw, they beat England (twice), India, New Zealand, Pakistan (twice) and Sri Lanka.

Jai Hind ! Best wishes to all the Indian players especially the young blood and the support crew.

Don't forget Pujara's valuable contribution - his long innings exhausted the Australian bowlers who had no steam left at the end.

Congratulations to Indian team. it's time to give long leave to kholi. Ajinka rahane better test captain than kholi. We see the miserable performance of kholi as a captain in IPL.

You are correct ...Kohli is a good player but never be a good captain...like Sachin Tendulkar... For the better future for Indian Cricket, give Test Captaincy to Rahane and One day to Rohith Sharma..
Even RCB must change him as a captain.

Captain Virat Kohli returning to India on paternity leave, major players getting injured, star batsman Rohit Sharma’s not-so-impressive batting, bowling attack by inexperienced bowlers all of whom played only handful of international test matches coupled with the racial abuses and sledging which are quite common in Australia, even if the visiting team draws the match, playing for the entire fifth day, it is more than a victory. Then, winning in such a scenario is really unbelievable. As little master Sunil Gavaskar rightly said, “there is a first time in everything”, referring to India’s earlier poor show at Gabba stadium, this victory is really memorable. Fortunately, this time Brisbane has not become bane for a visiting nation. Young players Shubhman Gill, Rishab Pant, Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur with the support from Cheteshwara Pujara believed in themselves in the cool captaincy of Ajinkya Rahane. Well done Young India, who at the end played like ODI! 2-1 victory by a visiting team, when everyone spoke about white wash is an achievement worth celebrating. Sensex has rightly joined the party with a jump of over 7 tons.
