Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jan 23: Post lockdown, there has been a considerable increase in the number of cybercrimes not only within the city commissionerate limits, but also in Udupi district. On an average, four to five such cases are being registered on a daily basis in police stations.

Usually those who commit these crimes are indulging in them by sitting in some indiscreet corners either in North India or some foreign destinations. Even though the police have been making honest attempt to reach to the bottom of the crime, they have not been able to achieve the breakthrough.

After the lockdown, over 200 such cases in Dakshina Kannada (DK) and over a hundred cases in Udupi district have been registered. Only a few among these cases could be cracked. In the city, cases in which money is withdrawn by using ATM cards without coming to the notice of the depositor are increasing, and every day, not less than three such complaints are received.

There are different types of crimes in cybercrime. If the banking details are obtained and money is withdrawn, it is tantamount to theft of financial identity. In such cases, goods and services are received online. Crimes after collecting online identity is identity misuse. In such cases, the victim has to face investigation for the crimes committed by a stranger. Such identities are used for drugs trafficking, online frauds, dark web transactions etc.

Copying of a profile of a person by another is known as online cloning. The person who steals this information and projects himself as the genuine person. Transactions by using profile of a commercial entity is known as commercial identity theft.

People have to be careful when they receive calls like ATM expiry date, renewal, call in the name of bank staff, offer of loan at a cheap rate, linking of Aadhar with PAN etc revealing OTP to the caller, visit to porn sites etc. Thieves also replace ATM cards in the guise of helping.

City police commissioner N Shashi Kumar, has advised people not to share their ATM password, bank details etc with anyone and exercise caution when dealing online. He says that it is not easy to find out persons defrauding victims here by sitting in a remote corner of the world.

    1. Please memorise the CVV number at the back of your credit or debit card and mark it dark color ink on the card . This number is used when you are doing online transaction ..While most cards ask for dual authentication (OTP on your mobile) certain US based payment gateways/pay pal wallets still use these store these numbers under your profile which is only protected by the username and password while you use the site . these says Malwares, trojans and key logging softwares can easily crack your password. Don use websites or payment methods which do not have dual mode of authentication ..essentialy the OTP that you receive on your phone.
2.Watch out your ATM ..often the scamsters place skimming device where you insert the ATM and use a small camera just above the keypad to capture your PIN that you type.
    3. Apart from the above ,do not fall for phishing and social engineering technics.
Cyber security requires change in behavior and thinking ..once you develop these new habits ..its there inside and you are aware of this all the time ..
This will save you from cyber criminals
