Mangaluru, Jan 24: The huge peepal tree opposite the iconic Venkataramana Temple at Car Street here fell on Sunday January 24.

The incident took place at around 8.10 am.

Fortunately, not many people were around at the time, and hence no injuries or casualties were reported.

It is however learnt that three vehicles - a crane, a water tanker, and one car, were damaged in the incident.

Sources said that the tree was one of the very few ancient trees in the city, and was well over 300 years old, with some locals claiming that it was thousand year old.

Speaking to daijiworld, a resident of the area said that around five or six years ago, Mangaluru City Corporation had undertaken an operation to axe the tree for road-widening, but the locals had opposed the move.

The tree fell in the direction of the main road, where, being Sunday morning, hardly any people were around. If it had fallen in the other direction, where there is a popular stationery store, parked vehicles and Venkataramana Temple, the damage would have been considerably more.

Police and fire personnel arrived at the spot and began operation to clear the debris.

As the ancient tree was starting to decay, another peepal sapling had been planted beside the older tree on April 19, 1963, in the presence of Manel Shrinivas Nayak, Ullal Srinivas Mallya, Indira Mallya, Jodumath Keshav Bhat, the then municipal corporation president Somashekhar Rao and other eminent personalities. Today, this tree has grown to its full glory.

"Age is not a particularly interesting subject. Anyone can get old. All you have to do is live long enough"

    Soch badlo, desh badega.

Common Sunil How long you aim to live in this world 100 years, 200 or eternallly.
Aging is process and no human or object and living things have come to survive endlessly.
For everything there is life span. When older people or animals or trees live up to the max. time will naturally approach and that is the cycle of life.
What is your proverb "Soch badlo, desh badega."
First train the politicians (including yourself) and country will pick up but no one can extend life span beyond certain period. Every thing is bound by wear & tear facts.

From the trunk of the tree it is visible that the tree lived its life span. May be British India time tree.
There are so many ancient peeple trees at most of the junctions around Mangaluru city which needs to be assessed by Corporation to ensure public safety.

That's the nice attitude we see only in India. Once people turn 60, they are treated as old and considered to have lived a full life and time to move on.

The reason for uprooting is the katte around the trees. Why tie th trees with enclosure which deny them sufficient water, manure and natural environment to grow. I

From the appearance of the trunk it makes clear that the Tree is very old, may be some centuries. (from British India times)
There are so many ancient peepal trees all over Mangalore city, especially at the junctions and Corporation should assess the condition of these trees and ensure safety of public.

Think conspiracy!!! Might be Govt uproot this tree and hence might have injected chemical to soften the root and hence may be uprooted. No public cry, work done as per wish of the Govt

Alas. No lives were lost. Only three vehicles damaged. The problem is that all such big trees standing dangerously which are hollow inside at any time may uproot which are dangerous to human life and property should be identified and such trees be cut to avoid these kind of mishaps.

What you said is correct, but so many religious groups will start protesting if they start cutting the branch ( sentiment). That's the main problems.
