Mangaluru: Elderly man crushed to death in hit-and-run accident at Thokkottu

Mangaluru, Jan 24: In a hit-and-run accident, an unidentified vehicle rammed into an elderly man at Thokkottu here early morning on Sunday January 24.

The deceased has been identified as Hammabba (60), a resident of Panemangalore of Bantwal taluk.

He was crossing the highway opposite Sahara hospital when the accident took place.

It is learnt that the vehicle smashed into Hammabba and sped off without stopping. He died on the spot.

Hammabba had come to Kallapu near Thokkottu to visit his relatives.

Mangaluru South traffic police have registered a case and search is on to locate the vehicle.

    Zebra crossings on Hi Way hinder the free flow of the traffic... overhead bridges is the best solution.

    It is evenmore dangerous to cross so called oneway which is located westward to flyover.
    Because the vehicles travelling to Ullal from Konaje road are allowed to move through underpass and continue to opposit direction in oneway.
    Why such behavioures are allowed?

    Solution is to reduce max speed to 40km/h - since this is ghat terrain and our city is getting overpopulated. Driving slow is inconvenient yes but if it can save lives then this inconvenience is a very small price.

    T.Lobo Bejai,do you think ,when speed limit is made to 40 or even 30kmh,these people consider it?They are simply hit and run mode and will not stop as this case happened .Even elderly man was crushed ,he /they fed away.No human life concerns .Only their own interests and when their own people get injured.How sad.People can wait for long time to cross road but noone will allow or stop to let the person to cross .Only own interest.Nowadays too many vehicles on roads.Heartfelt sympathy to the deceased family.May his soul rest in peace.

    Pathetic planning is the only cause, namesake one flyover, with that everything is over. Mangalore was known for big professionals, but none of the brains been used in planning the city in a decent way, only flash news in media for a day or two n then silent till the next incident.

    Sorry for the incident and i agree with Joy. However, could not understand why some dead persons have disliked Joy's comments. Is this because Joy addressed the person as "INNOCENT". I think these unhuman beings have no soul, no heart and no mind. For me they are dead. Shame on you guys. Learn to respect people around you otherwise you will be discarded and neglected like me.

    The main problem is people do not know were to cross the road. At the same time there are no designated place to cross the road ( zebra crossing) . When there are zebra crossing the motorists do not respect the pedestrians and pedestrians do not know that the zebra crossing is meant for crossing the roads. When things are like this our PM wants to go digital ridiculous.

    Dylan, zebra crossing is put up for the pedestrians to cross... But, as I have experienced as well as seen, vehicles will never never slow down near the zebra crossing. People have to wait till road is getting cleared or the traffic police should stop them. Otherwise these vehicles ply like as if they are not concerned about the pedestrians crossing over zebra marking.... You can experience it by yourself. Once you just try to cross over the zebra crossing, you will come to know. Elderly people run out of fear when vehicles fast approaching and sometimes even tumble and fall...
