Mangaluru: Police arrest 11 students for ragging freshers in college

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (DV)

Mangaluru, Feb 11: The Mangaluru city police on Thursday February 11 arrested eleven students for their alleged involvement in ragging in a private educational institution in the limits of Ullal police.

The arrested have been identified as Mohammed Shammas, Robin Biju, Alvin Joy, Jabin Mahroof, Jeron Cyril, Mohammed Suraj, Jaffin Roychen, Ashin Babu, Abdul Basith, Abdul Anas Mohammed and Akshay K S.

All of them are natives of Kerala.

It is learnt that the accused had ragged five freshers from Kerala. They allegedly harassed their juniors into cutting their hair, shaving, measuring classroom with matchsticks and so on. Some of the freshers were also physically assaulted, it is alleged.

Speaking to reporters, police commissioner N Shashi Kumar said, "The students who were harassed approached the college management, who in turn filed a police complaint. After interrogating 18 students in this connection, we have arrested 11."

The students have been booked under relevant sections of Education Act and other IPC sections.

They are all students of nursing and physiotherapy, the commissioner said.

Urging educational institutions to be wary of such incidents, the commissioner said, "Education insititutions, authorities, faculty, mentors and councillors should take steps to ensure that such incidents do not repeat in future. Sometime ago, eight students were arrested for ragging in another private college.

"In order to transform the city into Brand Mangaluru, the police will do everything possible to prevent such incidents. The police have zero tolerance for ragging. No student who indulges in ragging will be spared, no matter which college or background," he said.

"If any student is facing such harassment and is hesitant to approach college authorities or faculty, he or she may approach my office to share information," Shashi Kumar said.

He also said that there are several instances of students committing suicide due to ragging. "Fun should not turn to tragedy. Mangaluru is also an educational hub with as many as 8 medical colleges, 12 engineering colleges, 30 professional courses, 900 schools and colleges and 2 lac students, hence, we cannot tolerate such ragging cases. We will take stringent action within the purview of the law," he said.

The college authorities should have taken action by themselves. There was no need to invite the police for this. They could have suspended them for a few days and should have asked their parents to see the principal.

Teachers play a crucial role in preventing and managing the widespread problem of bullying. Despite this, scant attention has been paid to their views on this type of problem. India should introduce legislation to rid schools of bullies. Canada introduced legislation in 2012 . The bill mandated student groups to encourage tolerance, imposes reporting requirements and sets suspensions and expulsions for students caught bullying. several recent teenaged suicides have been blamed on physical or online bullying by peers. Such cases are undeniably heartbreaking and enraging. I appeal public response should be more in depth to these tragedies. Politicians and govt and police force and specially colleges, schools should have zero-tolerance approach to crime and bring more anti-bullying laws and policies.

Anand Mangalore, this ragging is done by the students who already in their time were ragged. Many of them dont give out out of shame .Some dare to oppose .Suppose they oppose or give out is more ragged. This is common even in girls college.Best is students should oppose and complain to police or superiors .That must have an end.Only one bad taste is there. Why the hell our colleges take these kerala students in mangalore I ask.what about our mangalorean students go empty where rawdism increases?Give our natives first .Naturally money speaks many times.Best is every student must bring a clean chit from Police for entrance .Throw these out because of their ragging.shouldnt be given anywhere entrance because of their behaviour.Note it in Police entrance.

Displaying photos of these students in the media is the best way to make them pay for their offence. Hope it's a lesson well learnt by all the students. Strict action should be taken for ragging and any indecent behaviour or attitude. Their appearance doesn't seem to show their seriousness about studies or the profession they have chosen to be their career. Hope they have learnt their lesson well to change for the better.

Well done Police department. These criminals should not be released on bail. They should be taught a lesson. All these criminals should be thrown out of Karnataka and should not be allowed to enter Karnataka. Most of the educational institutions admit these kind of criminals for money. Hope these criminals learn a lesson and don't dare to rag anyone.

Look at the faces , not washed, hair style , not having enough food, not gone to a good school, no discipline at home. This is what I will get . All look like ruffians. Colleges are to pass time. Nothing will be learnt . And you guessed it . They will all pass out with distinctions. Rest all will be left to their parents

Doesn't the professional college have guidelines for grooming like growing hair and beard; sorry to say they look like urchins! Education quality is deteriorating in DK due to mushrooming of colleges who give seats to anybody and everybody if they throw money! I wonder what physiotherapy they will learn and practice! This is the power of Gulf money!

Ragging in Kerala is common. These students try to keralise the Karnataka colleges. Rich students rag in kerala. Also some colleges in kerala use quality products of ragging which are banned.

Money speaks with them and the educational institution solely responsible for such incidents. They give seats on the basis of highest bidder rather than merits . Who knows these youth once completed their education can't do ragging with their patients?

The managements of Colleges should be more vigilant especially that of private Colleges. It is the pampering of the students by the managements over the years has led to such state of affairs.

Students from Kerala only come to Mangalore to have fun. They are admitted in the colleges with the help of some agents. After graduating they know they can go to the Middle East for a job for a low salary.

Students involved in ragging should be dealt strongly to give lesson to others. Colleges should take undertaking from students at the time of admission that they will not indulge in unnecessary issues and respect every one college + hostel and failing to this they will be debarred from college. Freshers should not be afraid of senior students and in case of any wrong doing inform college principle or Police. College is not a place for making fun and enjoyment at the cost of parents. They are there to attain good education to prospor their future.
