State BJP Leaders Request Lokayukta to Withdraw Resignation

Bangalore,Jul 2 (PTI): In a damage-control exercise, ruling BJP in Karnataka on Friday appealed to Lokayukta N Santosh Hegde to withdraw his resignation but he refused to budge.

A senior BJP delegation led by state party president K S Eshwarappa, Home Minister V S Acharya and Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Kumar met Hegde and pressed him to reconsider his decision.

"He (Hegde) said he would pay attention to reconsidering the resignation", Eshwarappa told reporters after the meeting.

He said Hegde was told that the BJP government would move strongly against illegal mining in the State and drew attention to Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa's statement affirming government's resolve to stop it.

Yeddyurappa is mulling ordering an inquiry against illegal mining in the state from 2003, he said.
"We will approach the Centre to stop export of iron ore from Karnataka," Eshwarappa said.
Hegde said later he was happy that the Chief Minister has admitted to illegal mining and promised to take action.

The Lokayukta had on many occasions spoken about illegal mining in the state but he said he took the decision to quit after deep thought and would not reconsider it.
Hegde said he initially said "no" to the delegation but when they persisted he told them he would reconsider his decision only "out of politeness" which in other words meant "no".

Hegde had recently announced his decision to resign with effect from August 31 accusing the BJP government of being indifferent towards tackling corruption and was particularly unhappy about illegal mining.

His resignation has dominated state politics since his announcement and a united opposition -- the Congress and JDS -- this week repeatedly attacked the BJP government on the issue of resignation.

A significant section of the public and intellectuals have come out in support of Hegde, prompting the BJP to take the initiative sensing the public mood.

The decision to persuade Hegde was taken at meeting senior ministers held at the official residence of Yeddyurappa yesterday and today, party sources said.

Our Lokayukta's image is still high. The Govt. is saved if Mr.Hegde if reconsiders his decision. But in the interest of general public and for eradication of corruption atleast to a minimum extent it is advisible if Mr. Hegde reconsiders his decision because it is very difficult to search a honest officer during these days.

Mr. Hegde should withdraw his resignation only if full powers are given to Lokayuktha, not merely accepting the crocodile tears shed on his resignation. It is the common man who wants him to continue but with full powers as all efforts go down the drain, if officials who are corrupt are let go happily, because of political intervention or non sanction to prosecute..

Yeddiyurappa must be happy that Lokayukta is exposing Reddy clans illigal activities. Yeddi unsuccessfully tried to control Reddy's earlier but his party leadership yielded to Reddy's money power and cutailed Yeddiyurappa's power.

It is for the sake of people of Karnataka State Mr. Hegde has to reconsider his decision. An honest officer like him is a need and not something that can be taken lightly. Yaddiyurappa may not be happy as heart to heart he is rejoicing at the resignation. But for the sake of ordinary people and for the good of the society we need Hegde to continue. God bless him.

Unprecidented turmoil in the state assembly and outside since a week has affected the government's reputation and thus though belatedly initiated steps to defuse the crisis by deputing ministers to Justice Hegde to reconsider the withdrawal of resignation as Lokayukta. It is a vidication of the stand taken by Justice Hegde. As stated by Justice Hegde poliiticians cannot be trusted and therefore,it is hoped that he is will take enough caution before taking any decision on withdrawal of resignation and see that demands are met in toto.

It is a good and the right approach on the part to appeal to Mr. Santhosh Hegde to withdraw his resignation. It is my sincere hope that he will reconsider his decision and renew his approach to bring to book all the offenders in the interest of The nation and the people at large. It is however expedient that his views and his decisions are respected, heard and action taken. This is not going to be easy as his dynamic approach and style of functioning are different from the people in power.

Mr. Santhosh Hegde - Please bear in mind that senor ministers are only voicing the feelings of good people at large. IF NOT YOU - WHO MR HEGDE? You have worked hard to ensure that justice is done to all concerned. Now that the representatives of The State have approached you perhaps you can review your decision and complete the jobs you have taken on hand.

    Respected Mr. Hegde,
Keeping the interests of the common public in mind it is time for you to re-think about your resignation and withdraw. As you very well know the resignation has not been accepted. Your greatest victory was bringing the Legistative proceedings of the state to a halt due to your decision which was may be a political subject for the opposition parties. India being a Democracy ruling parties will always be there to change at least every 5 years, if you stay at the helm of the Lokayukta until your health permits imagine the changes you can bring into the system. In recent years things have changed to unbelievable limits in India as well as the world.

To name a few... USA elected its first Black President and Karnatak elected the first BJP government ever in the south of INDIA. If you leave your seat no one can guarantee someone with your credentials will take that position. Until you grrom your successor it would be best for all you continue as Lokayukta and ensure through the media you get what you want to do your job the right way and cleanse this state in whatever way you can. The people of Karnataka will be always grateful to you and your immediate family for your sacrfices. You will be remembered with all those selfless leaders of our country. God Bless you and Thank you...
