Bantwal, Jul 3: Four persons sustained grave injuries, a Maruti Omni vehicle was gutted, and a house was damaged, after the gas cylinder of a Maruti Omni vehicle exploded at around 7 pm on Friday July 2 at Banglegudde here.

The injured have been identified as the vehicle owner, Ibrahim (60), his son, Haziz (24), and pedestrians, Rizwan (24) from Uppugudde, Panemangalore, and Ibrahim Musliyar (22), resident of Aladka village near here. All of them were shifted to a private hospital in Mangalore.

Reportedly, Ibrahim was moving in the vehicle along with son, Haziz, towards Nandavar from Panemangalore, when the vehicle, being driven by Haziz, suddenly stopped after reaching Banglegudde. As soon as Ibrahim got down and opened the boot of the car to see what had gone wrong, the cylinder suddenly exploded. Ibrahim suffered injures, and Haziz's life was saved as he too had got down from the vehicle at the time.

The window glasses and some tiles of a house located near the spot of the blast, belonging to Abdul Razak, were shattered, as pieces of metal and fire sparks flying out from the vehicle hit them, eyewitnesses said.

The vehicle was reduced to a mound of mangled steel in the accident. As it was raining at the time, the fire got extinguished before fire brigade came on the scene. Bantwal circle inspector of police, Nanjunde Gowda, sub inspector, Mohammed Rafiq, tahsildar etc, rushed to the spot. A case has been registered in this connection, in the town police station here.

Goes to show the callous attitude of vehicle owners that they are ready to take the risk for their selfish motives - even at the cost of somebody else's lives.

Alternatively, Peter, in your last line, there is a typographical error .. the word should be EXERCISE and not EXCISE as you mentioned. Pleae note the same.

In the meantime, I remember a similar incident which took place in central Mangalore and was reported by Daijiworld (not exactly sure which place and when) of an autorickshaw explosion fitted with a LNG kit but till this very day, nobody has been able to give the exact reason for that blast. Seems the autorickshaw driver was also careless .... must have wanted to save a few bucks, however lives were not compromised.

This accident supposedly is NOT to be interlinked / confused with the LNG kit episode.

Meanwhile I await to get a satisfactory answer and would ask Daijiworld to create more awareness so that these incidents do not recur.

This is the serious safety concerned issue. The gas conversation kits installed by un- authorised/ un- professional agency/ person pose danger not only to the vehicle but also to the surrounding area. For example, what I have observed and verified at one of the vehicle fitted with LPG by some Tom, dick & Harry that, when the ignition key turned ON without cranking the engine, gas solenoid energises and gas flow established & later after certain time if engine cranked on, definitely there will be nothing but big explosion due to large volume of unburnt gas less oxygen. There shall be hardwire interlock installed in such way, if engine did not start within certain time, gas flow shall be cut-off (De-energise the gas supply solenoid).

So sad to hear this news. At the same time I have a question that, is it really safe using gas in the vehicles as fuel? I am afraid to travel in such vehicles.

This is not a first incident in Mangalore where gas cylinder exploded and vehicle got burnt. Is there any technical reasons for this incident? What is the precaution to avoid this? Can any one share some knowledge here? This incident making me to think, whether all vehicles with gas fitting in and around mangalore are safe to travel? Authorities do the excise of cross checking the safety now itself or wait for a big mishap ?
