Karnataka Lokayukta Hegde Withdraws Resignation

Karnataka Lokayukta Hegde withdraws resignation

Bangalore, July 3 (PTI) :
Ten days after quitting as Karnataka Lokayukta accusing the BJP government of being indifferent towards corruption, Santosh Hegde today announced his decision to withdraw the resignation heeding appeals by BJP top leaders.

"If Governor H R Bhardwaj gives me time, I will meet him tomorrow to withdraw my resignation," Hegde, whose resignation had created a political furore in the state, told reporters.

Hegde's announcement came shortly after BJP president Nitin Gadkari and Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa called on him here and urged him to reconsider his decision and veteran leader L K Advani also made a similar appeal.

"The respect I have for L K Advani has forced me to withdraw my resignation. It is not out of political pressure I took this decision," Hegde, known for his crusade against corruption, said.
In his appeal issued in Delhi, Advani said "I have known Justice Santosh Hegde for a long time. He is an eminent jurist for whom all of us have great respect. As Lokayukta of Karnataka, he has certain concerns, I am sure the state government of Karnataka will address them earnestly."

Gadkari, in the city to attend a party convetion tomorrow, and Yeddyurpapa in their meeting with Hegde detailed the steps the government had taken on the illegal mining, an issue into which the Lokayukta had inquired, and promised to consider certain issues raised by him.

A delegation of senior BJP leaders from the state, including unit president K S Eswarappa and Law Minister Suresh Kumar, had yesterday met Hedge in an attempt to mollify him but the former supreme court judge had remained firm on his decision to demit office from August 31.

Gadkari and Yeddyurappa thanked Hegde for accepting their request for withdwing his resignation. "I express my heartful thanks to Santosh Hegde. Advani has assured him that the party and the state government will cooperate with him," Gadkari said.
Explaining his decision to retrace his step, Hegde said Advani had not only requested him to withdraw his resignation but also sent a message that the Karnataka government would consider his demands on strengthening the anti-corruption watchdog.
"For me Advani is like a father. He was a close friend of my father (former Lok Sabha Speaker late K S Hegde). I cannot go against his wish. I have to acceed to his request. Not for any political reason, but because of my love and respect for Advani, I have decided to withdraw my resignation", he said.

Hegde said Gadkari, the chief minister and the law minister met him and "promised to consider certain demands raised by me. I am totally happy and satisfied with the assurance".

He said Yeddyurappa had given him a copy of the letter written by him to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking policy decision to either ban export of iron ore or regulate its exports.

Asked whether he believed in the assurance given by the chief minister on conferring more powers on Lokayukta, he said "sometimes we have to believe assurances. I trust them. If it does not happen, then you know the consequences. I have the option to decide. My doors are open I can come in and also go out."

A relieved Yeddyurappa, who came under attack from Opposition over the Lokayukta issue, said, "Hegde was kind enough to consider everyone's request and agreed to withdraw his resignation.

"We have the highest regard for Hegde and the institution of Lokyukta. I assure that the Karnataka government will extend full cooperation to Hegde on the issues raised by him," Yeddyurappa said.

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram and the Karnataka governor besides state political leaders and intellectuals had also appealed to Hegde, who was, however, unrelenting on his decision.

The way BJP leadership has taken so much interest in this state issue spells clearly why they are so much interested in Karnataka. What they want Karnataka to Turn into? Its all selfexplaining. For a state issue like this all national leaders interfering ?????????? The immense joy in the faces is really really strange for a issue like this as if they have digged a large goldmine .Every issue of our state BJP leaders are interfering & finally group of leaders gives a press conference with a terrific joy & smiles & few garlands here & there! Something to really think about .Whether its a Hegde issue or a previous corruption issues they just want to interfere & ensure a continuance of this Govt at any cost.

Gladon .... You are right to a great extent. Justice Hegde should have withdrawn his resignation only after he has been bestowed with powers to act freely and fiercelessly. So far as I learn, it is only an assurance that he will be given more powers. Mark my words. Lokayuktha will not be given powers to prosecute politicians and bureacrats. Reddy, Yeddi and Chaddi have ruined Karnataka. Justice Hegde has been rewarded by the BJP since 1983. First, Advocate General of Karnataka, then Additional Solicitor General of India, now Lokayuktha Chief in Karnataka. Not surprising that he has yielded to L.K. Advani.

Mr.Santhosh Hegde's (Sorry for not calling him JUSTCE Hegde) statement immediately after his resignation in front of the camera was , He resigned because he was unable to to justice to the post of Lokayuktha because of the ministers intervience and he was unable to protect a officer who helped him in Belekeri scandal. He also said his self concious not allowing him to continue in that post and his decision of resigning is firm. He also said he will not do anything against his conscious.

It is very sad that Mr.Hegde forgot about his conscience and self respect while Mr,Advani called him. Advani is treated like MR. Hegdes father and Mr. Hegde can do anything if Mr.Advani say. Fine ,, no problem. its their own wish

But the real problem is, considering Mr.Advani's past history everyone news that what a type of political crook he is.He is proved that he can do anything for the sake of power.

Good luck to you Mr.Hegde.Lokayktha is not a place meant for you now. You cannot give justice to that post even if you want.

Tomorrow if Mr.Advani or any other political leaders asked Justice Hegde do some favor to their followers, who are criminals and corrupted, my humble request is Justice Hegde must stand firm to truth. Justice Hegde should not fail his aim and his promise. Who ever and what ever comes in his way to destroy the truth and honesty he must punish them.

If not then we can not believe any persons in India. We must wait once again some other country like England must rule us. Hope and wish Justice Hegde will be a tough person for criminals and corrupt leaders and government officials. Let him and his team is a night mare to them. Good luck and God Bless.

Public memory of general public is very weak and people are carried away by new issues and they forget the past. History is history and mining lords taking our government of Karnataka for a ride was a burning issue those days. Late K S Hegde is known for his principles and people still admire for his vision he had with true democracy. As Mr. Sunil Pinto rightly said, in current convenient democracy, quality is insignificant and quantity matters. While we had all praise for Mr.Santhosh Hegde's firm stand on sticking on to his resignation, we now expect him to deliver demands of justice and prove to the six crore public of Karnataka that by reconsidering his decision to withdraw the resignation, he will expose the culprits.

I am one of the many who in our comments appealed to The great stalwart Santhosh Hegde to reconsider his decision. May it be Advani or any one else - I am sure a lot of convincing had to be done for Santhosh Hegde to take this step. The question here is if NOT SANTHOSH WHO ELSE? Having said this it is my sincere hope that Santhosh will be given a free hand to do the job which he intends to do. Again I am quite affirmative in my statement that if The C.M. does not keep his promises this truce will be SHORT LIVED and that Santhosh Hegde will tender his resignation again NEVER TO BE WITHDRAWN.

It is therefore expedient that all commitments are honoured.

This was clearly on the offing! Justice Santhosh Hegde has finally done injustice. Don't get surprised if you see him in the election fray next time around. We already have one former Lokayukta in BJP fold and the second is on his way. Once again we have been fooled by a bunch of jokers! Advani has to be father figure for Justice Hegde because he had played an important role in Justice Hegde's rise as Advocate General, Solicitor General and Justice of the Supreme Court. I know I am going to stir a few hornests' nests. But more than the voters, his fans and others, the one person who would be greatly pained today would be his illustrious father the late K S Hegde.

Should we believe that Hegde has made a U turn only owing to the promises made by CM or Gadkari and Advani? Reading in between the lines clearly suggests that there is more to it. I won't doubt the integrity of Hegde but I have serious doubts about the integrity and promises of these politicians, whoever they are and whichever party they represent. We know how Congress had superseeded the Constitutional authority way back while appointing Supreme Court Justice. Now BJP is walking on the same steps.

Nothing has changed. Neither the politicians, political parties, politics nor the voters. They know that voters can be taken for ride and we don't know that we are fooled every minute just by using religion. The heady mix of religion and politics has turned into deadly venom. No one but we ourselves to blame for this mess

Please for Godsake do not fool us. Now let us see how best you can take care of your colleagues who discharged their duties and how you would protect them - Time will tell Mr. Hegde.

It is good news that the honourable Judge Hegde withdraws his resignation. It is nice to observe during the year a corruption-free day! It would be an all India corruption-free day. All can say this one day in the day all Indians are corrupt-free. And the honest God would be well pleased all the Indians on that day!

High political drama, a layman will not understand these kind of politics.Few days before, to an interview with TV9 Mr.Hegde clearly told again & again that there is no question of withdrawing resignation. There was that indignation in his eyes, But alas, we common men whom to believe?. Mr. Hegde you have behaved foolishly in front of crores of kannadigas. Kuch mila he kya?

Welcome decision by Mr. Hegde and taken at the right time to tackle corrupted politicians. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. It is easier to prevent something from happening than to repair the damage or
    cure the disease later.

    It shows his greatness and
    humility by responding to the
    appeals of political leaders.

He got a second change with double
authority to do his duties without
    fear or partiality. Judge Santosh
Hegde: you will be greatly honored and respected in the future by
    cleaning the house corruption-free.
All the best wishes and God's
blessings to carry on the duties.

This is a feather in the cap for BJP. BJP knew exactly what would be the fall out of Mr Hegde's resignation and its repurcussion on the image of BJP. Thats why the senior leaders liks Advani and party president Nitin Gadkari has made emotional appeal to Justice Hegde to withdraw. Now Justice Hegde must be given free hand to curb corruption and he must tame down Reddy brothers, which I feel is the need of the hour. But I have my own doubts how far Justice Hegde shall get government support and lets wait and watch who would prevail - Justice Hegde or Reddy brothers?
