Udupi: Citizens Respond to Bandh Call Enthusiastically

Udupi, Jul 5: In response to the bandh call given by political parties and other organizations in protest against the central government’s recent decision to increase prices of petroleum products, the people of the district voluntarily stayed indoors. No heavy vehicles ventured out today since Monday July 5 morning. Sparse movement smaller vehicles like two-wheelers and cars alone was witnessed in the roads.
Near Karavali Hotel in the town on national highway 17, the taximen, who are supporting the bandh call, had placed tyres across the road to block movement of vehicles. District superintendent of police, Pravin Madhukar Pawar, along with other police personnel, visited the spot and arranged to clear the road. Some youngsters were seen playing cricket in the streets of the town whenever the rains subsided.
The bus stand wore a deserted look, as buses stayed off the roads. Schools and colleges have declared a holiday today. No untoward incidents have been reported till afternoon.
The weely market beind held every Monday at Brahmavar remained a low key affair, for want of customers. Only a few pedestrians were seen because of heavy rain, on the road. There was a friction between some protestors and the policemen, after the policemen foiled their attempt to block the national highway in the morning.
