Two injured as Police Lathicharge MES Protest Rally in Belgaum

Belgaum, Jul 12 (PTI) : Two persons were today injured when police allegedly lathicharged a group of agitators, protesting the Centre's affidavit in the Supreme Court on the Belgaum border row. 

Police said trouble began when a group of people during a rally by Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) and Shiv Sena activists here started pelting stones on banners carrying pictures of Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa near the Collector's office and tried to forcibly take down the state flag.





Police resorted to baton charge after the protestors did not refrain from stone pelting.
The rally was in protesting against the Centre's affidavit in the Supreme Court on July 7, which said Belgaum district in Karnataka cannot be ceded to Maharashtra merely because it has a large chunk of Marathi speaking people and there had been no change on the Centre's stand on the issue.

It also said that reorganisation of states was carried out in 1956 and 1960 on the basis of various criteria and language was only one of them and not the sole factor.

    MES, if you guys love Maharastra so much why dont just cross the border into Maharastra and move on.. There is plenty of space there, leave our state alone and take your Manoos (nuisance) to Maharastra..

    PPl in some parts of maharashtra want a Different state called as Vidarbha. and they also want our Belagavi only cause the majority living there are maharastrians ....! PPl of belagavi please dont be blind folded by these acitivists as they are only payed for these kind of Protests ...

    Except few brain washed people now everybody understands that our politicians want to divide the country in the name of caste,religion,border. Few years before Bal thackerey was targetting south Indians and now Raj told that he will finish the issue once he get the C.m.post.and they are like govt.they don't care for the police ,law and court order.we Indians say that British people divided Kashmir and now our own leaders are doing their Duty.

    Karnataka is home not only to Kannada, but to Tulu, Konkani, Kodava and Marathi as well. I understand there are Marathi medium schools in Belgaum district, the city corporation's official language is Marathi, the water bills are issued in Marathi. The state has accommodated all langauges. So what are their genuine grievances of the Marathi speakers? Why this agitation in the name of language? There is a sizeable Kannada speaking population in Maharashtra also, living in peace and harmony with their Marathi brethren. Why not our Marathi brethren on the other side of the border follow their example?

    This is nothing but stupidity, Belgaum or Belagavi is part of Karnataka and will remain in Karnataka, central govt has made it clear by its affidavit in the Supreme Court on July 7, and also it has clearly explained that reorganisation of states was carried out in 1956 and 1960 on the basis of various criteria and language was only one of them and not the sole factor.
    MES and the leaders from Maharastra who enter Belgaum to create such chaos should be delt seriously and arrested for good. No bail.

    You have to endure the mighty blow from the lathis just for the sake of one bottle. If you go out and start working you can have n number of bottles. My young generation just use 1% of your brain and you will get 99% in return.

    It is really disturbing factor after seeing the mobs ransaking public properties in the name language and NELA that also in the soil of Karnataka.These mass are not fighting for MARATHI MANUS/BELAGAVI instead an fixed agitation of vested interst groups.MES/SS's unconsitutional rallies should be taken seriously by Karnataka govt.MAHAJAN REPORT IS FINAL AND BINDING FOR KARNATAKA AND MAHA.
